Bsky friends: if you get only one reading for a grad seminar on ethics in data analysis and reporting, what do you choose? @drandreahoward.bsky.social @kevinmking.bsky.social @foswald.bsky.social @marcuscrede.bsky.social @dingdingpeng.the100.ci @bwroberts.bsky.social @tedmond.bsky.social
More like roll out weak, amirite?
Awww shucks. I really appreciate hearing that. I think we had a really special review climate.
I stood on the shoulders of incredible scientists that served before me like @katiew.bsky.social and Kristie Jackson. And on the terrible terrible Dad jokes of Bruce Bartholow.
Ironically I'm chair of ARM and I only just got the email about this.
I have been so proud to chair Addiction Risks and Mechanisms for the past two years. I thought it was a rigorous, careful, thoughtful, and supportive study section. It was populated by the most incredible scientists.
It's now gone. Sad day.

Some shit is about to go down with NIH study sections, friends. Keep your eyes peeled for change that may affect your grant submissions.
The Criminal Justice team at Arnold Ventures is looking for a pending/recent PhD with strong causal inference skills, for a remote, part-time consulting position.
This is a great opportunity for someone considering a transition from academia to the policy space.
Deadline: March 15
Please share!
Nice one Bort

Me too. I have started to get better at writing functions for more complicated tasks (where I'd have to write a bunch of nested loops).
But I always prefer a loop because they're so readable and easy to understand.
One of the most tangibly lifesaving efforts of @standupforscience.bsky.social to date was to send an on-the-ground investigator to Guinea Bissau to understand the context of the unethical &CDC funded Hep B infant vaccines study.
We presented to a packed room of horrified House and Senate folks.

They didn't used to touch the butts! The butt touch was invented pretty recently because they did science and found out touching butt made you faster!
It's hard to watch man. Totally agree.
I like your attitude and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
HHS social media Editor: You got the pictures from the RFK Jr and Kid Rock photo shoot?
Photographer: sure did boss. real fucking sexy just like you asked.
HHS social media Editor: what
Yeah, so Iβm going to fight against this administration with every cell in my body and if you wanna call me partisan Iβm fine with that. Because at least I didnβt collude with the people doing this to children.
Thank you for your attention to this matter!
Instead, the academic publication system serves as a way for academics (primarily, though also other researchers to a lesser extent) to produce currency (articles) with which to buy things that matter to them. Think tenure, grants, speaking engagements, influence, etc.

This week has been exhausting. NIH staff are trying to thread a needle with a vanishingly small eye to generate performance evaluation criteria. Because of course they have to change so no one can be rated as βOutstandingβ.
Imagine taxing every cigarette instead of taxing them in batches of 20!
It's not surprising that taxation can have a big impact on vice behaviors. If this estimate is accurate, perhaps it's because the most frequent gamblers are the most impacted because of the per wager tax.
I have plenty of reservations about the reliability of funnel-plots and z-curves and such, as well as their interpretation.....
But holy shit look at that.
Middle school is so critical for the emergence of gender differences in identity and sense of belonging - now letβs do leadership!
The most important thing to me about my review of this week's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is that I cite Tom Spurgeon in it by name. AKOTSK is a decency fantasy, a term Tom coinedβa heroic narrative that puts kindness, cooperation, competence and fundamental humanity above all else. (Gift link)
