Implausible curly arrow mechanism
Very nice but I’m not at all happy with this curly arrow mechanism.
The same pride applies to postdocs too!
Congratulations Kelly Chibale!
It is always a proud day when one of your former PhD students receives an award.
Congratulations Liz, very well deserved!

So true and so demotivating for applicants.
Here’s a crazy idea: send a hard copy CV in the mail to the person actually hiring. It will take work to run the CV through their AI system. They might actually read it?
From a trick to avoid AI being used by examination candidates: give them hard copy!
As someone who has used nBuLi a lot, 10 molar and rarely even tBuLi too, this sounds very interesting.
I’ll never forget holding a syringe with 50 ml 10 M BuLi when an earthquake magnitude 6.6 struck… I was fine!

Could this be the product of citation strategies? The population of China gives them a big advantage
The intermediate in this process is really wild!
SciFinder is very expensive. I’d be surprised if UG students get to use it. PhD students are likely to have access in good Universities.
"The sweeping study... found that using AI in education can 'undermine children's foundational development' and that 'the damages it has already caused are daunting.'"
They include limiting kids' cognitive, social, and emotional developmen, and increasing inequity.

Tautomerism? Yes, that will fox any binding studies or multiply the cases to be considered. Gossypol caused a bit of confusion. Where are the carbonyls and where are the enols?

PhD available in my group, in collaboration with colleagues in microbiology and computational chemistry - "Metals against antimicrobial resistance - Understanding how bismuth inhibits metallo-β-lactamase enzymes". I'm very excited for this project, please repost!

I agree. I know of a textbook which covers carbonyl addition in Ch 6 but you have to wait for Ch 15 for SN1/2 …
An powerful opinion piece penned by #NIH scientists w/50 yrs of experience in collective civil service. They resigned from their positions recently. They witnessed hypocrisy about speech & freedom in academic research.

Indonesia and Malaysia said they were blocking access to Grok, the AI chatbot created by Elon Musk, this weekend amid mounting outrage over the bot producing sexualized images of real people.
Some simple advice. Don’t rely solely on AI/LLMs check the sources with a critical mind.
AI summaries should be an option not the default for searches.

My personal experience is that it was suffering in the UK decades ago!

And then it commented “Chemical mechanisms are notoriously difficult for AI image generators to render precisely.”
It certainly got that right!
Wacker nonsense
Look at this lovely catalytic cycle generated by Gemini (2026 version). It is so beautifully laid out.

I commented that it was completely wrong and the response was “The image generated contains several chemical inaccuracies…. !”
Odd, it doesn’t check its own work??
Two mistakes here:
1) using X
2) using Grok
Just don’t trust either of them!

I always say, just draw it. You do that all the time!
I was genuinely celebrating, I’m not a fan of “systematic” nomenclature, especially in exams
