Viburnum are so beautiful this time of year. A snapping turtle even stopped to admire them. ๐ฑ #garden #gardeningfeed #flowers
Hi, I've added you.
I'm in Eastern, NC. The first lilies in the ground start popping up here in early March. I haven't had any issues with growing them here.
I'm in 8a
I put the scales in ziploc bags with damp peat moss for 3 months. The scales will form little bulblets at the bottom. Some of the scales disintegrate and only the small bulblets are left. I plant the small bulblets in trays. It will take a few years for them to become big bulbs.
You're welcome.
It works well. I linked to an article about it in another post. I didn't mention that I put the bag in a shoebox for the 3 months. I then took the bag and vernalized it in the refrigerator until I was ready to plant.
Fritillaries can also be scaled in the same method as lilies. Daylilies cannot be scaled. Several bulbs can be reproduced through twin scaling. This article talks about bulbs that can reproduced through twin scaling and includes directions to do it.

I had pictures of them in bags but I'm not sure where the pictures are. This is a great article that describes the process. I peeled from the bottom of the bulb. I wet some peat moss in a ziplock bag and placed the scales inside for about 3 months.

Garlic beds are planted in landscape fabric in a field. The garlic plants are large.
Pear tree is full of small white blooms. Green leaves are also on the tree.
Garlic and pears are two of my favorite things to grow. The pear blooms are a little early, so there is always a chance for a late frost. That is a problem with a warm late winter in the South. ๐ฑ #garden #garlic #trees
A tray of small lily plants. There are green leaves that have just emerged from the soil.
Small lily plants that I started in trays. They are the result of scaling. Scaling is the removal of the outer scales of a lily bulb to create new bulbs. ๐ฑ #garden #plant

Planting extra is a great idea. Iโm with you on 2031. I have so many seeds that I plan to get around to.
Iโm in NC. I grew up in a different part of the state than I live now. I was used to growing in zone 7. I am now in 8. Even subtle differences can mean learning new things. You will get used to it.
