On today's #WomenInMusic Spotlight we feature the unforgettable Judy Canova (1913-1983), a Vaudeville performer who had a hit radio series for 12 years centered around her persona as a singing comic country bumpkin as well as a successful film career. We remember her today!

I may be unduly pessimistic but it seems to me that what we've done with all the modern statistical & computational machinery we have access to leaves a lot to be desired. We c/should have deployed it to augment the meticulous exploratory methods we already had but used it as a replacement instead.
In a sense, we have completely replaced a lot of scientific processes with the power of statistical methodology and essentially outsourced part of our scientific thinking and practice to statistical inference. And now we're confronted with the risk of the same thing happening with AI.

"working class" to politicians and pundits is an aesthetic, characterized by rolled up sleeves and rugged manual labor
to the rest of us, it just means we can't afford to tell our abusive bosses to kick rocks, because we have lofty aspirations to maybe get our teeth fixed some time this year
A pioneer of autism research is asking us to rethink the diagnosis, only viewing as autistic those diagnosed in early childhood (usually before 3 or 5) with severe intellectual/language impairments. Everyone else with the label may be suffering from something else...

Israeli attacks on UNIFIL peace keepers tonight. Irish service men were not directly hit, but they aided their counterparts from Ghana. This will further deteriorate Irish Israel relations.
Young offenders 'with DLD were more likely to have their behaviour interpreted as non-compliance.'
Which of course has serious implications for them!
This is why we need far greater awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)

Salma Yaqoob @SalmaYaqoob Almost feel sorry for the haters who are trying to spin Muslims voting for a woman in a party led by a gay Jewish man is evidence of Islamist sectarianism In fact it's evidence of genuine tolerance, rejection of superficial identity politics and ability to prioritise tackling common concerns of cost of living, protecting public services and rejecting war mongering. And the promotion of mutual respect and individual freedoms. The coming together of people is terrifying for the ruling elites.
Totally this.
The rightwing hate βjournalistsβ are spinning Muslims voting for a woman in a party led by a gay Jewish man as Islamist sectarianism.

This whole thread is a very important insight as to why getting information from an LLM, even if you are dutiful and vigilant, corrodes your ability to ascertain what is true or not
** LLMs do not provide the info you need in order to evaluate truth. **
I agree with a lot of the criticism about how universities work these days and their marketing. But I find it funny that the loudest critics are often people who've never even been to one.
It's clear that unis have been yielding diminishing returns over the last 20 years, and that's probably going to get worse. But if you go around telling everyone that spending five years learning the bases of the knowledge in your field is a total waste of time, that really says something about you.
And people also kill babies sometimes! Why is it bad only when a machine does that?? A baby-murdering machine is so much more useful than a baby-murdering human!
βStudy after study shows that students want to develop these critical thinking skills, are not lazy, and large numbers of them would be in favor of banning ChatGPT and similar tools in universitiesβ, says @olivia.science

Many are appropriately outraged by Altmanβs comments here implying that raising a human child is akin to βtrainingβ an AI model.
This is part of a broader pattern where AI industry leaders use language that collapses the boundary between human and machine.

i don't know how to put this politely but stating that your work is approved/supported by companies like open ai, google and anthropic doesn't give you the credibility you think it does.
for me, this is a clear sign that i am not interested in engaging or working with you
