Hello, friends! After 10(!) years of #AdventOfCode, I've made some changes to preserve my sanity: there will be 12 days of puzzles each December (still starting Dec 1) and there is no longer a global leaderboard. Read more:

added a cheat sheet to the official Git website
(with a lot of help from other folks who work on the website)

Another little side project I finally took the time to tackle, a small helper for checking my repos for outdated GHA dependencies.
Yes, Dependabot can do this but it's a bit more noise than I need. Plus, it was fun to figure out for myself!

McMaster-Carr CS is amazing. Realized I made a mistake on an order within a minute of placing, requested a change, and they responded a minute later. It's 8pm!
"Have a question, comment or need assistance? Send us a message. We will get back to you within an hour."
They're not playing around...
The PSF has adopted pypistats.org, ensuring long-term stability while staying open source and community driven π Thank you to Christopher Flynn, for operating this awesome community service for 6+ years- and for continuing to maintain the project πͺπ pyfound.blogspot.com/2025/08/pypi...
I've also been keeping myself entertained by going through the EA version of David Kopec's Computer Science From Scratch. It covers some really interesting topics that I mostly haven't explored before, including an NES emulator!
It's been a lot of fun & 100% recommend

Got a new offline-only computer at work recently and ran into some annoyances getting offline installers for my VSC plugins and Python packages, so I made some tools to help myself out!

I'm sure things exist but it was fun to work out for myself π
Did you know your MacBook has a sensor that knows the exact angle of the screen hinge?
Itβs not exposed as a public API, but I figured out a way to read it and make it sound like an old wooden door.
APOD is 30 years old today. In celebration, today's picture uses past APODs as tiles arranged to create a single pixelated image that might remind you of one of the most well-known and evocative depictions of planet Earth's night sky. In fact, this Starry Night consists of 1,836 individual images contributed to APOD over the last 5 years in a mosaic of 32,232 tiles. Today, APOD would like to offer a sincere thank you to our contributors, volunteers, and readers. Over the last 30 years your continuing efforts have allowed us to enjoy, inspire, and share a discovery of the cosmos.

"Going forward, to implement Executive Order 14170, all Federal job vacancy announcements graded at GS-05 or above will include four short, free-response essay questions"
Complete laughable insanity.

I canβt believe itβs the end of May and I have to turn the heat back on βοΈ
I used to really look forward to reading VSCodeβs release notes, now itβs all just Copilot. Sad.
Also wanted to use CalVer with this so ended up having to update bumper to support this use case. Tripped over myself a bit on the initial release but was able to find an easy (read: lazy π) way out.

Continuing on my "fun hooks on a lark" journey, had an idea to make a hook to check a package's supported Python versions and fail if an EOL Python release is supported. Still have some things I'd like to work on but initial functionality was pretty straightforward!

Just what I was hoping to hear from my student loan provider π
I'll pass, thank you. Last thing I want to do is reminisce about being crippled by student loan debit until my mid-30s.
pleased to hear the penguins have won the trade bargains
Threw together a quick hook to help me remember to start swapping my license metadata around now that the license classifiers have been deprecated by PEP639.
Seems to work alright for my own stuff so far!

I'm bored, so have a look at this! A future main site feature to show IBM's key keyboard-related dates and events. Feel free to let me know what you think, though bear in mind it's WIP (content nor styling/layout is finished!)

Microsoft I am begging you please stop injecting Copilot into every facet of my electronic existence.
Iβd prefer at least a 60%, missing the number row was too hard to get used to π
I picked a terrible time to start pricing out a new home networking setup. Guess I'll just multiply everything by 1.5 π«
Does reporting SMS spam ever actually produce results? Iβve gotten 4 of these fucking unpaid toll messages today aloneβ¦
End-to-end encryption is secure because it protects the contents of your communications in transit between the endpoints. If you make one of those endpoints an editor at The Atlantic, no amount of encryption is going to save you from your own stupidity.
Been distracting myself from the stress of it all recently by poking around with Dart & Flutter. Some parts have been really fiddly but overall Iβve been really enjoying how quickly one can get a cross-platform UI up and running.
I think every designer should write a love letter to a font at least once in their lifetime.
This is mine: A 150-year-old font you have likely never heard of, and one you probably saw earlier today.
