It’s stunning to me that the New York Times did not put the story on the bloodbath at the NIH, CDC, and FDA on its front page this morning.
It took the Nazis one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours, and 40 minutes to dismantle a constitutional republic.
When the fire starts to burn, every good person better be ready to man a post with a bucket of water if you want to stop it from raging out of control.
Nearly every medicine we benefit from started with NIH-funded research. Early discovery work starts in academia.
Immunotherapies?
Gene therapy for rare diseases?
Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s medicines?
Vaccines?
Novel cancer treatments?
Psychiatric medicines?
You betcha.

I once was in a room where a very smart woman said something along the lines of, "create your own scientifc mafia" (e.g. a closed group of people in a particular field, having a controlling influence).
Never been prouder to be a part of a brilliant group of scientist who look out for one another.
Things are so grim, but seeing the #DSPAN fam stay strong, supportive, motivated, and united is a beacon of hope.
They can cancel our program, but they can’t cancel the community we’ve formed.

In addition to the NIH halt, this order aims to create (among other things) a list of all federally funded grants that involve DEIA "under whatever name they appear". They're coming for research involving health equity, social determinants of health, centering marginalized populations, etc.

I am astounded that @nytimes.com has not reported on the horrific letters that went out to all of the government agencies. Absolutely insane lack of journalist integrity. Shame on any news outlet not reporting this.

NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.
Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
