Competing on price is a decision. So is pursuing growth over margin. My company (not retail) has competed on service for a premium. Some compete on convenience over price.

Where is your evidence? Shark vacuums have a lower markup than Miehle. I used to pay a premium for Smart Wool socks because their quality. Kept paying a premium, but the socks started to wear quickly after company was purchased by PE. There are many such examples.
For sure. But from my perspective in a corporate job, AI boosterism is the bigger danger, especially at high levels. LLM tools continue to generate an unacceptable level of error for many uses. Never-AI voices might be loud online, but it's the opposite in most workplaces.
American publishing regularly punishes women in their 50s by simply not interviewing them for new jobs in the way @saribotton.bsky.social describes here. So itβs great revenge that she launched Oldster magazine on her own, now with 70k subscribers.
Statement from Oscar-winning director Hamdan Ballal: This afternoon, nearly a year after we won the Oscar, the same settler who attacked me shortly after l returned from Los Angeles-Shem Tov Lusky-again led an attack against my home and my family. Four of my family members are currently arrested and one is in the hospital. I invite all journalists and diplomats to come visit me and my family this Tuesday, February 17, to hear about how the situation has gotten worse in the year since we won the Oscar, as it has across the West Bank. Email me to coordinate your visit: hamdanalhrane90@gmail.com Two weeks ago we managed to get a decision from the Israeli court that the area around my home is closed to non-residents, but the settlers break that order and still come with their flocks almost every day. We call the police, they do nothing. The army comes, they do nothing. Today, Shem Tov Lusky-the settler who attacked me in my home shortly after I won the Oscar last year-came with his flock to my home. My brother called the police to report the incursion. The army came first and immediately raided our house, attacking everyone inside. Then they arrested two of my brothers, a nephew, and cousin. Another brother was badly injured and is now in the hospital. The Israeli court decision was supposed to make things a bit quieter for us. But the opposite has been true. The settlers have ramped up their harassment and the Israeli authorities have done nothing to enforce the decision, and today they joined the settlers in the attack. 8 hours ago
From Hamdan Ballal, co-director of last yearβs Oscar-winning documentary βNo Other Land.β This is happening now.
I hate that feature. It's bad enough to be on zoom and worse when I'm talking to anime figures.
Listened to this Ezra Klein podcast the other day and learned Cory Doctorow and Tim Wu are buds since elementary school. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/w...
Our cat who started out the shyestβ wouldnβt let us see her for weeksβended up being out most loving sweet cat EVER. I miss her every day. πββ¬
I wrote about this book and about how Brandon's brilliant posts over the years may have made me less able to immerse in it.
Really nuts how many men were like "Me Too went too far, and I need to email Jeffrey Epstein about it."
Just a reminder that when you become a @truthout.org sustainer, you not only support Truthout's independent journalism but also the Truthout Center for Grassroots Journalism, which is helping to cultivate and maintain the ecosystem of indy journalism we need in these times.
When they say Me Too "went too far," they mean "got too close."
Or the E Jean Carol documentary. Today i read itβs been denied distribution. sffilm.org/event/ask-e-...
Hearing folks are bummed they missed the Eyes on ICE training - but good news, it's all recorded and public! We'll be holding more live trainings soon, but if you aren't one of 200,000 who already watched it, find it here: www.youtube.com/live/zqka9fU...
As usual these days, I start off writing about a book and end of swirling on the right-here-right-now.
You made a lot of assumptions about what groups do which suggests to me you're not part of any behind the scenes. Anyway, good day.
Groups like what?
There were a few hundred people in Evanston alone, plus others at the rally on Thursday. Protests are only one way to measure. Are you involved in any groups?
I'm in the Chicago area and the focused anger and demand for real accountability and dramatic change is intense
I like that theyβve given up on even having immigration enforcement as a pretext for any of this. Itβs just purely armed masked goons wandering around in the middle of intersections harassing U.S. citizens as a display of force now.
This tracks with the comment someone from my home town left on my FB page, which uses claims that she was an anti-ICE activist and has two older children not in her custody as, basically, justifications for her murder
In Chicago's Winnemac Park tonight, a growing crowd of around a hundred neighbors have gathered for an emergency vigil for Renee Nicole Good, a 37 yr old mom shot and killed by DHS in Minneapolis today.
NEW: At least four videos show what really happened when ICE shot a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday.
DHS has established itself as an agency that cannot be trusted to live in or present reality.
Our latest:
Bravest motherfuckers you've ever seen. They just saw a neighbor get murdered and still out there. Maybe let's see some local officials with the power to arrest show as much backbone as these voters PAYING YOUR FUCKING SALARY
imagine telling yourself on january 6, 2021 that five years from now things would be so much worse
Happy New Year to you too!
Spent my last morning of 2025 weeping in bed as I finished this magnificent book (Chilean Poet by Alejandro Zambra). I liked it so much it led me to do a thing I usually loathe: calculate annual favorites.
Iβm doing something similar! Busting out of Evanston to a MKE hotel in Jan for a few days of holing up to finish a book in a blank-slate environment close to enough to home but not home.
All that standing between me and two weeks of holiday break are 60 more sections of this anti-harassment compliance training.
Same. After many years of laboring under the tyranny of TLDR in all written communication, the trend toward long, draggy videos that withhold info for way longer than they have to is driving me around the bend.
