15 October 1818: Irish novelist Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849) writes from Hampstead to her stepmother in Ireland about her visit to the noted writer Anna Letitia Barbauld (1743-1825).
Unfortunately Stoke Newington does not make a good impression - "What a dismal place!"

According to biographer Nicholas Courtenay, the Beaufort-Edgeworth connection with St John-at-Hackney began with the burial there of Sir Francis Beaufort's first wife Alicia Magdalena Wilson (1782-1834), daughter of Dublin-born Captain Lestock Wilson of the East India Co & Bonne (Boileau) Wilson /4

The Beaufort family tomb in Hackney contains the remains of Sir Francis Beaufort's 2nd wife Honora Edgeworth and his niece Frances Maria Edgeworth (1799-1848), both sisters of Maria Edgeworth via her father’s 2nd & 4th marriages.
Frances Maria is memorialised in St John's Church, Edgeworthstown. /3

A very poignant memorial to Ireland's Great Famine at Grattan Beach, Galway. The park is named after Celia Griffin, a 7 year old child whose death from starvation was the subject of a Galway inquest in 1847.

"Marble Halls" came from Balfe's hugely successful opera "The Bohemian Girl" which premiered at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 1843.
Early in 1847, Balfe & London impresario Benjamin Lumley raised £2000 for Irish Famine victims through a fundraising concert.

Typhus is easily transmitted in crowded, insanitary conditions - could be nothing to do w presence of a corpse.
History of disease shows how it is socially constructed, esp when disease biology is unknown.
This is a good read on typhus as 'Irish fever' 👇

The caveat is that we have to read those sanitary reports through the then understanding of how disease was transmitted. The 'miasma' theory that disease was caused by "bad air" - like smells from a corpse - was still dominant in 1870s.
It was 1909 before body lice were id'd as the vector for typhus
