Passionate about the scientific study of learning and literacy. Working to translate research into evidence-based educational practices for the benefit of all students. Equity and social justice depend on effective instruction and intervention for all.
Iβm excited to get back to summer and podcasts like reading-roadtrip.castos.com This weeks episode with Jen OβSullivan was packed with great examples for teaching students inferencing skills! Iβm looking forward to more from the Reading Road Trip!
This was a great conversation!
Not just relevant to Australia- this is worth reading.

Brilliant!
Powerful words from Executive Director Kareem Weaver to ground our work heading into the new year: β[Literacy] is the gateway to society, its institutions, and the basic opportunities that we want for all kids.β
#Literacy is the fundamental #CivilRight of our time.
Do certainly model and scaffold skills, but I think the goal should be learning, not completion of a task or product.
I love this. It makes me think about an often frustrating attempt ensure a student produces what everyone else is producing rather than honouring what a student creates or learns at their level when they participate in the process.

For more information about using retrieval practice in the classroom, I appreciated thus interview with Blake Harvard www.podbean.com/ew/pb-35bpr-...
Theses arenβt my ideas, they are a few Iβve assembled from some awesome people - They are features of UFLI - Foundations and could be incorporated in other programs. Iβm interested in hearing other strategiesβ¦. 9/n
Practice reading decodable passages that include the skills that have been learned. Reading passages helps connect to meaning, helps develop automaticity, and allows practice reading with prosody⦠8/n
Spaced practice - spread out practice across sessions and across days - fold-in review from previous days into new lessons β¦ 7/n
Interleaved practice - alternate different items - when you return to the target skill it is a new retrieval from memory and that makes the memory stronger β¦ 6/n
Speaking aloud when reading and writing - have students say the sounds as they write them and read the word aloud when theyβve written itβ¦ 5/n
Scaffold when students are having difficulty so they get the correct answer (e.g., continuous phonation for blending or demonstrating (I say-you say))β¦ 3/n
Repeat retrieval of correct answers. -Have students repeat a correct answer after an errorβ¦. 3/n
whole group responding: if one person gives an answer, then thatβs retrieval practice for 1 student; if everyone answers then everyone gets the practice β¦ 2/n
This week I got to talk with teachers about the importance of retrieval practice and maximizing opportunities to respond when teaching students who are struggling to learn literacy skills. Some useful strategies: β¦ 1/n
Systematic explicit instructiin and practice is not the only important part of teaching reading, but it is very important. New research published about UFLI- Foundations highlights the effectiveness of this phonics program. www.edweek.org/teaching-lea...
Iβve recently had some interesting conversations about spelling challenges. Iβve appreciated two podcast episodes from Melissa and Lori Love Literacy for practical ideas (episodes 191 with Pam Kastner and episode 192 with Savannah Campbell)

Another blog addressing a commonly asked question.
This time I'm looking at how long we should teach phonics when learners have additional needs, especially a complex profile.

Congratulations to Emily Hanford who has done so much to highlight how so many children have been taught to read (but havenβt learnt) using ineffective methods.
If you havenβt already, do find it and listen π§

The NRP Report (2000) found that independent silent reading may not be the most efficient use of instructional time.
In our study, we replicated the finding. We found that independent reading didn't contribute meaningfully to improved reading outcomes.

Love this teachers insight and personal experience! I think her experience resonates with a lot of teachers.

There is a shortage of school psychologists across Canada. This is at a time where access to critical mental health services for children and youth is becoming increasingly problematic. Canada needs more visibility of the profession, recruitment, training opportunities and programs.
