Never in a million years did I ever fathom when I resurrected the Epstein story in 2018 that it would lead to first arrest of a British Royal in four centuries. Not since King Charles I was arrested in 1647.

As ICE and CBP testify in Congress, we have updated our tracker of deaths at the hands of immigration enforcers. 25 have been killed with another 18 seriously injured, and there have also been 44 deaths in ICE/CBP custody.
Wondering if this will come up at the hearing.

A month ago, NYT columnist David Brooks wrote a column decrying the media and political fixation on the Epstein story.
This afternoon, House Democrats released a new tranche of photos of an event that Brooks attended with Epstein.
New College was quick to signal support for Trump's higher ed "compact," which dozens of schools (incl conservative ones) rejected as an attack on academic freedom. Just weeks later, NCF moved to raise tuition - apparently contradicting the agreement: suncoastsearchlight.org/new-college-...

Mario had the right to work and report in the U.S. at the time he was arrested for livestreaming a protest in June.
He was held for over 100 days in ICE detention, and he did not have the chance to say goodbye to his family in person before being deported.
BREAKING: Our client Mario Guevara, an Emmy-winning journalist detained by ICE in retaliation for livestreaming law enforcement activity, will be deported tomorrow to El Salvador.
Mario and his family are being punished for his reporting. This cruelty is meant to stifle our free press.
OMG! Mychal did it. Anyone who first caught this wonderful human gaining an audience on TikTok knew there was something special happening. What an incredible journey and story. Promoting reading and libraries is so damn important right now, and I can't think of a better ambassador.
4/ Some ICE officers on the scene reacted emotionally to the incident. One said: “What the fuck?” Another told me: “This is a real problem.“
3/ An agent then appeared to shove people away from the elevator entrance, which led to Elibol falling to the ground, as footage captured by photographer Stephanie Keith shows.
2/ Journalist L. Vural Elibol and other photographers apparently wanted to understand why ICE agents were following a woman into a public elevator. As they tried to enter the elevator, a supervisor from the ICE team at the New York Field Office shouted, “Get out the fucking elevator!”
1/ DEVELOPING: A journalist was rushed to New York-Presbyterian Hospital following another incident with an ICE agent at 26 Federal Plaza, an immigration court in NYC. The last I heard, he was getting X-rays for his lower back.
3/ Stacy Scott, the public defender whose office covers that county, said it's a jarring and confusing new rule. "All of a sudden, they’re just not in the jail anymore [...] We don’t know where they are."

2/ In a follow-up to our recent investigation on the practice, @karanewhouse.bsky.social and I found that in at least one FL county -- Alachua -- the sheriff's office is no longer even telling the court when ICE issues a detainer for a defendant and takes them into custody.
Short thread 🧵
1/ In Florida (and nationwide) under Trump's 2nd admin, ICE has expanded its use of "detainers," the controversial and longstanding practice of holding people in jail -- many on minor charges -- past their release date to turn them over to ICE custody for possible deportation.

@karanewhouse.bsky.social and I looked into this key method the Trump administration has used to fuel mass deportations, and how it has impacted a local family: suncoastsearchlight.org/ice-jail-bon...
Some of the people deported never get their day in court. For those who are taken by ICE after paying their bond, local criminal cases remain unresolved. Those cases sometimes turn into bench warrants as defendants legally presumed innocent are unable to appear in court.
