"A declining population means fewer people are left to die"
Too many have died. Too many families & communities have mourned losses.
We deserve evidence-based health care policy that spans beyond election cycles & political points. Help us call for it: friendsofmedicare.org/ISupportHarmReduction
If lower, death rates in Lethbridge would be due to policy, they are not, why are rates at a record breaking high in Edmonton?
Same province, same policies.
Rising or falling rates are mostly driven by the toxicity of the drugs.
Read our blog.
A black balloon on a white background. Text says in memory of those we lost to overdose. Somebodyβs someone.
March 6 is Black Balloon Day, a time to remember and honour the people weβve lost to substance use related harms and the toxic drug poisoning crisis.
Today we speak their names and hold them close in our hearts.
Say their name.
Graph showing fatalities in Edmonton from 2017 to 2025. Graph shows that deaths hit a peak of around 650 or more deaths from 2021 onward without abatement. 2025 is on track to hit a new record once all data are complete and updated.
...and mirrors to advance its war-on-drugs agenda. This benefits private friends of government, property developers, and police. Stop feeding them all public money by acting as stenographers.
Better headline: Edmonton on track for record year for drug poisoning fatalities.
Begging news outlets, especially @globalnews.ca, to refuse to report Alberta government propaganda around drug death rates without context.
1. Alberta's capital Edmonton is breaking fatality records. Report that first.
2. Lethbridge is the 4th biggest city in the province. It still has...
Single Person Social Welfare by province (maximum) 2024:

MB: $11,379
AB: $11,089
NB: $11,061
ON: $10,455
NS: $9,415
Where is her evidence?
She states of something she has heard, but has she analyze each application to see if they come from longterm residents or new arrivals and if those from outside have prior ties to AB?

The government of Alberta is arguing for safe supply - of nicotine pouches - correctly, sleeting that products from the illegal and unregulated market should not be harder to buy than see supply.
This is what we have been seeing all along about the unregulated drugs.
youtu.be/3GXxXCD_p64?...
This should be a huge fucking wake-up call to every level of government playing footsie with fascists and their pals in βlaw enforcement.β
These people are by far the biggest threat to public safety - not protesters, not encampment dwellers, not people using drugs. Fascists.
Join us for a lunch-hour info picket to demand urgent federal action to enforce the Canada Health Act! Bill 11 opens the door to two-tier health care and is the biggest threat to our universal Medicare system weβve ever seen. Join Friends of Medicare in Calgary and in Edmonton, outside MP offices.
Regulating the drug supply would end this madness.

Smith goes on to say she will also remain steadfast in her commitment to medical science and liberal arts education.

Governments are responding to the toxic drug crisis with "organized abandonment," withdrawing support and leaving people vulnerable to harm, poverty, and death.

Note: On the same day this podcast was recorded, Jason Kenney was publicly listed as a lobbyist for a firm that deals with skills-based immigration.
AND, he keep referring back to (you guessed it) the TRUDEAUS for the immigration situation in Alberta.

Governments approach the toxic drug crisis with organized abandonment, when those in power deliberately withdraw support, leaving people vulnerable to harm, poverty and death.

You can blame Alberta for spreading the myths BC has now internalized to allow so many to die, but this is foremost a crisis of leadership.
(And, those myths were conceived in BC, then funded, incubated and nurtured in AB, and exported back to BC.)
Thanks for sharing π
We already had an integrated health care systemβbefore the AB government dismantled AHS.
They're spending billions of public dollars on endless restructuring & private profits, instead of expanding public capacity & improving care.

βCanadaβs refusal to fully uphold the right to life has allowed for thousands of preventable deaths across the country. We are hopeful the committee will hold Canada to account & spur the changes we need to ensure all people in Canada can be healthy & safeβ
