kickboxing and muay thai primarily, though i dabbled in a couple others when younger

i personally prefer striking to grappling, but i've friends who found great joy in jiu jitsu and judo as well

i'd advise taking trial classes at a few diff gyms to see which matches your vibe

even within those in the "pragmatic skill" camp, there is a gradient

"self defense" types are the ones i'm most skeptical of, but there are folks who are very serious about competition matches, who can be surprisingly wholesome - and can give you advice on how to pace yourself, not get injured, etc

there can be better and worse gyms for that

in my experience, less toxic gym environments correlate highly with a higher proportion of women
