Most Uber Green drivers are positive about their EV. But today's was depressing. Leased an ID.3 2.5 years ago (poor choice, inefficient *and* short range.) Can't charge at home, so it costs him a fortune to run. Will replace with PHEV which he will never plug in. All wrong!

Yup, reached that point. Kids refuse to go to bed, Santa is totally knackered at that point but retains the advantage of sleeping fewer hours.

Graphs showing data from the API of https://www.neso.energy/data-portal
There's an unofficial UK wind generation record of >23GW in the history data. Beating the record of 3 weeks ago. Outlook for low-carbon generation remains solid, albeit that nuclear is down again.

Unusual forecast dynamics. I was expecting a surplus of renewable energy Sun-Mon, but demand forecast was low by around 8GW! The UK became an exporter, which is quite rare and as a result of both, UK wholesale prices for Sun-Mon were slightly higher than Sat-Sun despite higher low-CO2e generation...

Please tell me there is a very special punishment reserved for drivers who park their car, which has tailpipes, *sideways* across an EV charging space?

Graphs showing data from https://www.neso.energy/data-portal
Nuclear generation recovered a little this week. Nov 21st was the first significantly supply-constrained (high wholesale price) day of the winter so far - cold temp and few imports available. Next week there will be a similarly low-renewables day, but temperatures should be warmer and prices lower.

A reasonable week has just passed for UK low-carbon generation. Torness2 has converted to a "planned" refuelling outage so half the UK's nuclear generation remains offline but it's been fairly windy, with more similar weather to come. Imports have been more volatile than I would expect...

Wind generation has dropped away in the last couple of days, as forecast. The forecast for next week has improved though. It would be nice if nuclear generation were a bit more stable, but Torness2 has unplanned outage in addition to the 3 planned. That's a problem with such an old nuclear fleet...

The last week has been as good as expected for UK low-carbon generation and it will continue for a few days yet, with no major lull on the horizon, just a gradual waning - plenty of time for that to change though. Nuclear stabilised just below 4GW, with both Hartlepool and one Heysham reactors out.

UK low-carbon energy was in short supply as expected this week, with a depressing amount of purple gas and brown woodchip generation in the history. Even imports were in short supply at high cost. Nuclear generation continued its slow recovery. A big reversal will take place starting tomorrow...

For the nerds: carbon intensity on 4th/5th hovered around 50g CO2e/kWh. Well off the record 19g from April 2024, but Storm Amy coincided with the longest period of under 2.5GW nuclear generation I've recorded since January 2024. UK needs more supergrid connections to move the power...

Storm Amy was spectacular for UK low-carbon energy, driving near net-zero for two days 4th and 5th October. We're now in an autumnal lull, with nuclear generation slowly recovering (hopefully to remain maintenance-free for the winter) and wind generation forecast to increase again from 18th.

A blistering, excellent, gloomy read. I can't agree with all it says about the value of print - after all, I read it on a smartphone. But I do see that most of the latest generation seems incapable of even doing that.

I settled on this order because there will always be a day frequency of demand anyway, which solar aligns well with, and I wanted to use somewhat intuitive colours. Yellow for solar doesn't show up on a white background so I'd need to switch to a dark theme...

UK nuclear generation remains at historic lows - hopefully it will be strong for winter this year, with all the maintenance completed now. The wind lull of last week was cushioned by strong imports. It will go lower, but back to strong wind generation by the middle of next week.

Nearing the end of an impressive couple of weeks for UK low-carbon energy - very little gas but also very low nuclear generation! Interesting to see how imports have been able to fill the gaps. Ireland didn't need UK exports at the windiest times...

Home page - on a website? Which address? There are/were at least two mobile apps for Tuya, one called Tuya and the other Smart Life. I have the impression Smart Life is the more maintained. Devices retain their schedule even if disconnected from network but you might need to reset (hold down button)

Update: Heat pump running costs after two winters
Now that we are in May and the heating has effectively turned itself off, I updated a previous graph to show four full winters - two on gas ...
It's all about the electricity tariff. Then you can optimise insulation if needed. But the boiler upgrade scheme incentive requires all the costs up front. Our triple-glazing is now installed for next winter's data collection to begin.

Some good times for UK low-carbon energy! Nuclear is still languishing but the autumn wind has arrived and is powering some very low CO2e/kWh and minimal gas power. We had an internet outage on 4th Sept so there is a data history flatline.

Window showing condensation on the outside pane
I loved seeing condensation on the **outside** of our new triple-glazed windows this morning. It's the perfect sign they're working already, keeping heat inside so effectively, that the outer pane gets cold. Fitter is back next week to finish the job... yeah we haven't cleaned up yet! #LowEnergy

We had a big lull in UK low-carbon generation - look at the historic imports. Nuclear dropped to 2.6GW, the lowest since Nov 24. Autumn seems to have arrived in the form of wind generation though, and we should see some really low wholesale prices on 31st all through the day.

Correct ours is also a Daikin. Page 96 of the service manual mentions "cold region setting for defrost change" so really this is a question for your installer, I wonder if they know. You might get away without changing it, depending on local climate conditions.

Sorry I meant to write "one of the splits used for *water* heating" above. All the splits can be used for both heating or cooling but the pump can only cool or heat at one time - hence defrost mode briefly pauses the heating to reverse mode and melt ice. It won't cool the house don't worry!
