Instead of funding the enforcement of current regulations and clamping down on illegal vehicles we get this performative nonsense from the government.
This will only reduce cycling rates and thus make the roads more dangerous.

Reducing - and enforcing - speed limits for ALL vehicles to 30km/hr in urban areas & cameras to detect cars breaking traffic lights would save scores of lives annually, but it might annoy some motorists so instead we get this performative BS from govβt.

Cartoon by Andy Singer. Caption: cities go out of their way to accommodate bicycles. Picture: man saying "No need to take away parking or driving lanes on main street. We'll give bikes this great parallel route!" While pointing at a map of a direct car route and a meandering bicycle route.
Too true...
This is disgraceful. The trains are already overcrowded with a whole load of housing being built on the basis of the rail upgrade. At this stage it is a health and safety issue at the stations and on the trains with the existing volumes of passengers.
DART+ SW has been "paused" with no inflationary increase in active travel budgets yet more roads are going to be built in a health and climate crisis. Make it make sense.
Four months after it was promised, we finally have the government's transport investment plan between now and 2030. It's bad. Roads are in, public transport is out. A lot of public transport projects being put on the long-finger to make funding available for new roads.

Long tail ebike
4000km later and I am still totally in love with our family longtail ebike. This is a regular reminder to anyone that is considering taking the leap to just do it, I guarantee you won't regret it.
Galway deserves a chance to breathe, but emotive arguments cannot brush away the fact a second ring road will suffocate the city in traffic irishcycle.com/2025/04/24/g...
Unless we have experienced similar tragedy it is impossible to understand the pain that has been brought on this family in Galway today. There is no excuse for our roads and streets not being safe for children to walk and cycle along.

Effects of Commuter Cycling on Physical Activity, Cardiometabolic Health and Body Composition The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of a 10βweek commuter cycling intervention on physical activity (PA), cardiometabolic health and body composition. A randomised controlled trial was conducted in healthy males and females (n = 26, BMI β€ 30, β₯ 20 years β€ 55 years). The intervention group (CYC) cycle commuted (148 Β± 38 min.wkβ1). The control group (CON) received public transport or petrol vouchers. Λ V O2max increased in CYC (10.5 Β± 16.2%), decreased in CON (β2.8 Β± 12.3%) (p = 0.03). HRrest decreased in CYC (β5.4 Β± 6.8%), increased in CON (1.7 Β± 9.5%) (p = 0.02) as did diastolic blood pressure (β1.2 Β± 7.5%, 11.9 Β± 16.5%, respectively, p = 0.02). Weekly logbooks indicated no group difference in total PA (Group p = 0.15) or change over time (p = 0.18). CYC conducted more moderate and vigorous PA combined (p = 0.008). No changes in body mass were observed (CYC: wk0 78.5 Β± 9.0, wk10 78.7 Β± 9.0, CON: wk0 69.8 Β± 6.7, wk10 70.3 Β± 6.7 (p = 0.17), or difference between groups (p = 0.61). Body fat (sum of 4 skinfolds) was maintained similarly in both groups (p = 0.95). Body fat (DXA) was 29.4 Β± 9. 7% before and 29.5 Β± 9.8% after in CYC (p = 0.97). The intervention did not alter Cβreactive protein, HDL, LDL, or total cholesterol, fasting glucose, insulin or HOMAβIR (p > 0.05). In conclusion, some cardiovascular benefits can occur with commuter cycling even if total PA and body composition are not altered. The increase in more intensive PA is likely responsible for the enhanced cardiovascular fitness.
Another study concludes that cycling is good for your health.
ββ¦ commuter cycling βΌ150 min/wk for just 10 weeks can improve cardiorespiratory fitness, resting heart rate, and diastolic blood pressure, all known markers of cardiovascular health.β

Days like today make my cycle commute an absolute joy.
With the world going to hell in a hand-basket, it's good to notice & be appreciative of the progress being made in some quarters, like the now car-free Sallins to Naas greenway. Kudos to Kildare CoCo for advancing this
@naascycling.bsky.social
Interesting that the @ccacireland.bsky.social are suggesting we spend approx. β¬4bn on electric cars.... while these vehicles are part of the solution, cars cause congestion and it is estimated it will cost the state β¬2bn by 2030....
β οΈ Good to see the reductions on speed limits for Local Roads come into effect today. There's been a lot of confusion & clickbait around it, but todays changes are only happening on small, rural roads where the current limit of 80km/h is not suitable and most would drive at or around 60km/h anyway.
As the cold snap wears on I'm increasingly frustrated that it's still not safe for me to cycle in Naas because the paths are like ice rinks, uncleared, ungritted. Meanwhile, most roads are well maintained & safe for driving.
Why should pedestrians & cyclists accept this clear deprioritisation?
If @kerrycoco.ie can do it, why not Kildare County Council? It's not like it caught them unawares, or they haven't had time to address it. It's 4 days in at this stage, and still, nothing.
