We are careful with using the word authoritarian around here since it is slathered so generously and thoughtlessly in much of today's political rhetoric.
But when Attorney General Ken Paxton decides it's time to jail a political rival for exercising the plain rights of free speech that are sacred to our social contract, no other word will really do.
Whatever you think of Democratic legislators' decision to flee the state rather than vote on redistricting, it's no crime to support them. But Paxton hopes to make it one for Beto O'Rourke.
