It turns out, basically your mind flips a coin on whether to use "is" or "is not" when trying to remember these statements.

This negation of a statement happens separately from the comprehension, both in where in your wobbly ape jelly it occurs and when.

Humans have a very, very hard time remembering statements that contain negations.

You read a sentence like "colorless ideas sleep furiously," and you first attempt to make sense of it, interpret it, in a way that'd make it meaningful and true.

And *then* deny it. Later. Colorless ideas do *not* sleep furiously.

That was generations before the internet, where basically everything is either a lie or lashon hara. Where milliseconds after anything happens, there is more misinformation about it than the entire library of alexandria, pumped directly into your brain.

Lashon hara is considered such an evil thing because it's so fucking *slippery*. It is where bad faith thrives, it is so extremely easy to slip into it without realizing it. To spread it, without even knowing you are doing so.

It's not a lie, so you can't just dismiss it as a lie. The other person can totally honestly get defensive and prove your accusation is false, they were being totally honest.

You can't really even go "well, you said that knowing I would interpret it as an insult or accusation"

It's easy to see why: how the fuck do you argue with it?

It's a true statement. They could be literally quoting something the person said, in public, on video, without really distorting context. You can't go "oh well he's lying"

*That* is lashon hara in a nutshell. A true statement, not a lie, but one which absolutely conveys a totally negative impression of another person.

Speaking lashon hara is considered one of the most heinous things you can do, it's literally put right up there with murder.

In Judaism, there is a whole huge, massive framework called Lashon Hara, evil speech.

Lashon hara is *not* a lie. It is a true statement, that can be interpreted to give a negative impression of another person.

Again: mere exposure to lies, fucks with you. You get corrupted simply by hearing them. They alter your memory despite you not believing them, despite you arguing with them.

In the moment, with someone else confirming them, they will go against the group.

The next day, they will be a bit less certain about whether they were right, in that moment. Memory just a bit fuzzy.

Now, the interesting thing is that this result is short-term.

When you ask the subject later, even one who has had that backup, their memory is not certain. They're only pretty sure those lines were the same size.

Consider the well known Asch conformity experiment.

One of the variations in the original study was to have one paid actor confirm the subject is right. One other person in the group saying "no, they're wrong, these lines are all the same size"

The effect vanishes.

Mere exposure to misinformation, retroactively fucks with your memory. Even arguing about it, will do this. Even if it's a seemingly tiny detail.

The more you go "no are you fucking with me? I saw it with my own eyes, you're just making shit up," the more that misinformation will fuck with it.

Psychologists have tried to figure out the minimum amount of misinformation necessary to fuck with a memory you have seen with your own eyes.

And there basically isn't.

Think about how police interrogate people, how the court system views eyewitness statements, etc.

How do you know?

Because if you are asked about it a while later, you will have associated "gun" with the event. You'll take longer to differentiate between this video and a version where a gun has been added, etc.

You watch the video of a guy buying a hot dog.

Someone in the group asks why no one mentioned the gun in his hand.

You are *damned* sure there was no gun, you tell them they're making shit up, etc.

Your memory has already been corrupted.

The mere presence of after-the-fact misinformation, fucks with memory. Mere exposure to one person lying about the thing, affects how you'll remember it.

And it doesn't matter whether you disagree with them.

Have them discuss the event in groups, and have one paid actor bring up details not in the video. etc.

You will find that they will *helplessly* adjust their memories to account for these later wrong details. They will honestly start adding shit to the memory and distorting it without knowing.

There's an interesting cognitive bias called the Misinformation Effect.

It is very easy to study this. Take people, show them a video of, say, a man buying a hot dog at a street cart.

Then, make them read very confident but very wrong descriptions of that event.

It's hilarious that "working class" now applies exclusively to the racist failsons of regional car dealership owners but every unemployed trans person is an "elite".
