If they don’t take that into account before, that was a failure of scope on the part of engineers and (more likely) leadership.

Real world, non-tech scenarios have to be considered and contingencies proposed. They are often abandoned after cost-benefit analysis, but they shoulda still made a plan.

Not a local anymore, so I’m not plugged in as much, but my wife is in town this week. She texted me about Elfman on Tuesday. I saw this thread this morning and here’s my reply.

Because (the entirely false) possibility of getting autism is worse than brain damage or death.

Good to know where I stand in their view.

Title card from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. The scene has a Baby Groot focused on the right side of the screen in the foreground flanked by speakers and a Walkman. The background shows an out of focus battle against a tentacled alien.

On the left of the screen it reads “A James Gunn film” in the movie’ title font with “James Gunn” stylized similar to a blue neon sign.

A subtitle reads “(ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA’S “MR. BLUE SKY” PLAYING)”

Reminder: the plot if Guardians 2 was Chris’ character resolving daddy issues. I don’t put sole blame on @jamesgunn.bsky.social because films involve hundreds of people, but it does say “A James Gunn film” at the beginning.

Not just Star Trek. I remember the gasps at a panel when I asked James Gunn about more Gamora screen time. “We’ve had six movies with a lead actor named ‘Chris’ and none with a woman or PoC. You’re writing Guardians 2 now. Anything you can do about that imbalance?”

So many pearls clutched.

It reduced surgery times by 40% and recovery times/hospital stays by 50%. Bucholz started a medical journal (and hired a questionable webmaster) and eventually productized his work. It is now used in many ORs for ENT and brain surgery. It does this physics, imaging, and science, not AI.

You have real-time visualization of medical instruments in a patient's body.

And the kicker?

This was in 1995.

It wasn't cheap! It required an SGI Onyx that cost at $500K. And you needed two for redundancy. But Dr. Bucholz was doing surgeries with the tech and pioneered "frameless stereotaxis".

12.02.2026 17:07 👍 18 🔁 4 💬 1 📌 0

Now you can know the position and orientation of the instrument. You have a 3-D model of the patient. And if you're smart, you can use use a powerful computer to compare the registration LEDs in the OR and the imaging to overlay the instrument position onto the 3-D model.

I worked (as webmaster for a medical journal) for Dr. Richard Bucholz, Professor of Neurosurgery at St. Louis University Medical School.

"Who's he?"

He's the guy who replaced the frame and with LED markers adhered to the patient's skin. He also added LEDs to the medical instruments.

to generally know where the instrument was in relation to the surgery target by comparing the imaging and skull frame with the instrument and the skull frame. It got better as computers got faster so the models could be viewed in 3-D (and rotated, zoomed, panned, etc).

How do I know?

12.02.2026 17:04 👍 12 🔁 2 💬 1 📌 0

Thing is, knowing where a medical instrument is in a patient's body didn't need AI. This has been done for a long time. Stereotactic surgery used a wire frame mounted to a skull during a CT/MRI. The frame was left so during surgery, the doctor could compare the imaging with their instruments...

Oh, that won’t happen. Nurses don’t get paid enough to fly. They are “essential workers” which implies low wages.

As much of a 💩bag Whedon is, I was a big fan of Buffy, Firefly, Dr. Horrible, etc. Joanne is a trogolodytic terf, but her stories were a huge part of 1997-2007 for my family.

I can't enjoy them now, but i won't say i never enjoyed them.

I take no joy in watching this unfold.

None.

But I do hope it forces some of you to recognize that you are out of your depth.

Far too many of you spent time picking apart the Harris campaign instead of doing what marginalized communities have always had to practice: harm reduction.

The big difference, is that after the 2 white people were killed, Senate Democrats are making the call to not fund ICE more. As they should.♥️👍🏿

But after cops killed more Black people than any year *in recorded US history*, right after Floyd and BLM, Senate Dems supported *increasing* cop funding.🤦🏿‍♂️

Anyone, and I mean absolutely anyone, that tries to tell me not to point out that Black folk are being killed and detained at 10X to 100X the rate, gets brushed back.

ICE shot and killed 2 people in January 2026. That is horrific. Cops shot and killed 28 Black people in January 2024.

Twenty eight.

BTW when I say abolish ICE, I mean abolish it entirely and replace it with exactly nothing. Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. That's it.
