The earthquake which struck Lisbon in 1755 left the monastery practically entirely in ruins and finally abandoned after the nationalisation of the monasteries in 1834. Today, the Palace of Pena is located in that place.

Obidos is an excellent example of medieval architecture. Its walled fortress and castle are a popular tourist destination. The town of Óbidos is known as the 'wedding present town' as it was given by King Dinis to his bride, D. Isabel, on their wedding day in 1282 ⚜️
