William Hope Hodgson inventing cosmic horror in Blackburn is as pleasingly unlikely as Mervyn Peake writing the early chapters of Titus Groan on Blackpool's North Pier, which is a thing that also happened.

Here's me writing about something other than William Hope Hodgson! I suspect there's major crossover between Hodgson & Machen fans.

It's not often you see William Hope Hodgson merch!! @blpublishing.bsky.social launches clothing featuring excellent cover art from their #TalesOfTheWeird collection, including some WHH titles. I'm hoping 'The Night Land' makes an appearance...

Hodgson's widow continued submitting his work for publication for years after his death (both unpublished & previously published items). The photos in this piece were taken while he was at sea, and had been previously published as far back as 1907.

From the vaults, this set of William Hope Hodgson books, published by Holden & Hardingham in 1920/21. Marketed as a "cheap edition". I'll put the individual covers below.

I quite enjoy the 70s paperback vibe of the Penguin Weird range, but yeah, I prefer the British Library art.

A first edition of The Ghost Pirates by William Hope Hodgson (yours for just £2,700!). The cover includes two lines of uncredited verse: 'Strange as the glimmer of the ghastly light / That shines from some vast crest of waves at night.'
"The thing had come more forward over the rail; but now, before the light, it recoiled with a queer, horrible litheness. It slid back, and down, and so out of sight. I only have a confused notion of a wet, glistening Something, and two vile eyes."
