You’ve said you don’t really drink or do drugs but that you get drunk once a year. What would be the occasion?
I just got drunk with Ed Sheeran — I drank two Modelos and I got put on my ass. This was at Santa’s Pub [in Nashville] — me, Noah Kahan and Ed Sheeran. They had just played something, and Ed was like, “Do you want a drink?” I was like, “If I’m getting drunk this year, it’s getting drunk with Ed Sheeran.” So he gave me a Modelo, and I was like, “Whoa, I’m feeling this.” He’s like, “OK, dude, I’m on my 11th.” He hands me a second one, and my wife had to drive me home.

What did you think when you heard Sabrina Carpenter's song "Dumb & Poetic," where she talks about a guy getting off to Leonard Cohen? Leonard caught a few strays over the last couple years. I don't think of mine as a stray - it was meant with love. But what I said is true: He was having an identity crisis at a monastery and still managed to be horny. That is so admirable. I wish upon everyone the vitality to maintain horniness for that long in a life. As for the Sabrina song - I mean, if her project is based around horniness and cleverness, then of course she's into Leonard Cohen. Who is more horny and clever?

I remembered the Boygenius lyric while I was listening to "Forever Is a Feeling," which feels long on horny poetry. Thank you so much. Is that fair? Oh, for sure. I think there's maybe a little bit more looming loss and dread in it. But I tried to have a few solely lusty things going on.

Some people seem to want you to claim it. Because they want to shout at me. They want to see me stand there and look dumb like I know nothing about the music and that I'm just taking the good bits of it and making it popular. And that just couldn't be further from the truth. Is that a gender thing? Everything's a bit of a gender thing. People who care deeply about their genre and want it preserved, they see me coming and they go to the concert and they see all these young women with ribbons in their hair - maybe it feels like an attack.
