the order of how ideas propagate in my networks (private DMs -> ORI discord -> twitter -> screenshot and send it to other networks, text messages, etc. Idea provenance tracked at each stage, via a flexible social norm, not hard tech)
this is really fun because it's testing at various levels - I am curious how many things in my corner of the internet has made its way to theirs, but also how much of this is novel to the professor (and watching him try to puzzle over their meaning & function)
I asked students in a small college in upstate NY to pay attention to what words are spreading in their corners of the internet & try to identify its origin & what the word does
i just feel like if sociology was a serious discipline they would be testing theory by fixing radicalization pipelines, and setting up deradicalization pipelines, and whoever's theory is correct is the one that produces the desires empirical results
(it's about the time gap between when it is created and when it reaches you)
(this is NOT true btw but I really enjoyed thinking through it - what is the defense mechanism that the youth have against us adopting this strategy to kill their culture/slang?)
I am surprised these don't yet have a "an LLM told me about you"
someone around here said something like "I no longer feel dismay when arguing on the internet because I model the other people as a force of nature, like a storm. No use getting mad at the weather!" and I liked that a lot
You wake up one day & realize you are a source of evil. This is good news!
They don't yet.
Even across related literatures (holding language constant), there isn't much motivation to check for novelty systematically.
I attempted to do this a bit in my latest paper, though.
For now, we could just preprint and post requests to check our novelty on social media sites.
is this true? can anyone corroborate?
when a scientist discovers something new, how do they check that no one else has already discovered it and wrote it down with different language?
i wanted to give a word to this concept, something like "certified open marketing" or "certified psyop". It is "certified" NOT by a third party, but by the fact that there is a prediction of what it will do before it launches
does this concept make sense to you guys? @cwonus.org @daytura.bsky.social @shibbi.bsky.social
we actually had a case like this, and I want to do more now:
defenderofthebasic.substack.com/p/my-first-o...
"can we predict, in principle, the βemotional resonance vectorβ of a new idea before it spreads"
yes, absolutely! All you have to do is preregister with the open memetics institute. If your thing goes viral in the way you predict, then that's proof
Current status: visualising "water level cuts" of HDBSCAN clustering on pol.is data from protest, thinking on filter bubble propagation, #queer / outsider identities & hierarchical navigable small world networks.. #complexity #democracy

the concepts page so far has been writing down the "stuff we all already know" but in doing so we're revealing what that is, and what fundamental things we maybe don't agree on. I'm intentionally going slow / only adding one at a time because I want as many voices to contribute!
I really do think the MAIN bottleneck right now is coordination/creating a shared language. There are a lot of people that have testable theories, some that I think are already breakthroughs, but everyone's using their own homegrown language, so it's not clear they're talking about same things
if you're comfortable with github you can see the discussion on the first PR we merged here, as we were debating the purpose of this document / what we're driving towards

you guys might be interested in the communal "glossary" we just start building last week, starting from the ground up, kind of towards laying down the axioms cc @daytura.bsky.social

yeah this is solvable if you take reflexivity as a fundamental part of your axioms, not something you try to eliminate. From michael smith's "subjective science" (morphenius.substack.com/p/subjective...)
Semble alpha is now open! β¨
Check it out at semble.so
More details in our leaflet pub! (link in next post > )
(experimenting with memes to unite left/right)
screenshot to get around word text limit (also - if there's a beta testing thing for Semble or a discord or w/e I'd love to test it out! I've been getting all my ORI people to write on github to get used to the workflow of micropublishing & reviewing each other)
wait is there a workflow for cross posting from twitter -> bluesky or vice versa?? does anyone have a doc / tutorial for this, I want to try it
Cool idea for high signal curation
(sharing screenshots until @defenderofbasic.bsky.social sets up crossposting ;) )
Looking forward to enabling this with semble.so !
