Been trying to prioritize books I already own, but I was feeling blah over the weekend. Just to get out of the house I went to the library.
Grabbed some new releases including Kamilah Cole's An Arcane Inheritance: Dark academia fish-out-of-water feat. missing memories & déjà vu. Really good so far!
Yes!! Especially when they're competing with more professional pods officially made by the creators themselves. People have gotta have some *reason* to tune in that's unique and worthy of the listeners' time (this is a pet peeve of mine, if it's not obvious 😅)

The thing is, I've always been skeptical of the literary merits of self inserts. But the OTHER thing is, if you don't write your MC w aspects of your own body not commonly repped in fiction? Who will?
(Or the people who do may well choose to write them unrealistically or derogatorily.)

I don't think it matters all that much if a house is open-concept or not. Like, I'm sure different layouts generally work more for certain individual families/situations. But I don't think it's destroying our lives and households or whatever, either way

I believe the whole point of making art is to be delighted by making it. Or perhaps more precisely to be gratified by making it--some art, for instance, comes from anger, and while anger is not delightful it is important to express, explain, convey, etc. That expression is gratifying.

This worked so well for me last month! It was amazingly rewarding, so I think I'm going to carry it forward into February. (I might not update this new accountability thread every day. But I do think it helped, so I want to keep that going, too)
Tbc, I live in a comparatively, moderately progressive area in the US American South. Queer people existing in literature may not be mind-blowing to some of my neighbors.
But you never know who might need it & wouldn't have encountered it otherwise.
I read a lot of physical books. Many of which are queer. And when I don't want them anymore + am too lazy to trade in/donate them? They go in the Little Free Library.
It's not activism. But I like to imagine this way maybe there's someone local getting something they need.

The month is almost out, and overall this has been a successful experiment! One thing that would've made it better would be to wake up earlier. Give me more time for writing before I need to get going. But so far, I've loved waking up & writing 1st thing, and hope to continue past January ❤️

If you ever need help remembering if it's "weary" vs "wary," just put the prefix be- in front of it & see which one gets you closer to the word "beware."
The "ware" in wary & beware are related. Telling someone to "be wary" is the same as telling them to "beware."
