De La Soul - "3 Feet High & Rising"
1989
Such an amazing debut. They were in the zone. This will probably do pretty well in the poll also.

Went through the hashtag last night to ensure I wasnβt forgetting anything. Not a single mention for this. Can only be collective amnesia, right?
It's a good thing, such a good thing..

Super dope debut.
Outer sleeve and spinning vinyl record. a-ha (1985) βHunting High and Lowβ
First up for #5debutalbums8589. Iβm going alphabetically by artist and I have 89 qualifiers in #johnsvinyl to spin. This is a terrific record that wonβt make my top 5. #nowplaying

The D.O.C. - "No One Can Do It Better"
1989
Insanely dope debut. I'm not a huge fan of the rock song on here, but outside of that, this album is perfection. Dr. Dre outdid himself on production too.

Coldcut - "What's That Noise?"
1989
Solid debut and an often overlooked album in the history of instrumental hip hop and DJ albums and how early on they did something like this.

Ultramagnetic MC's - "Critical Beatdown"
1988
Kool Keith is a one of one individual, and he showed it right from the start. This is another one of those albums where a couple of the singles have better other versions, but it doesn't really matter, this is dope.

Tracy Chapman - "Tracy Chapman"
1988
What a powerhouse of a debut. She gets so much sound and emotion from just her voice and guitar, and what a songwriter. Amazing.

Slick Rick - "The Great Adventures Of..."
1988
Solid but uneven debut. The great songs are insane good. This was an important album in that he invented new ways to record rap vocals, which influenced a wide range of rappers from all different styles.

Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock - "It Takes Two"
1988
Obviously the title track is the main attraction here, but "Joy & Pain" was also a huge feel good hit as well. This is a better album than I remember thinking, but it still isn't a contender with competition this thick.

Pixies - "Surfer Rosa"
1988
Realistically, this will probably win the poll. I was late to the party for them. I don't think I consciously heard any of their songs until I saw Fight Club, honestly. This is definitely a great album.

My favorite album from Uncle Al if weβre being totally honest. Enough for a top 5 placement? Maaaaaybe.

MC Lyte - "Lyte As A Rock"
1988
This is maybe a little uneven but when she's on, she is ON. Great debut.
#5debutalbums8589
Such a great debut and sadly the only only album by the classic lineup. Goth's defining album, I loved it at the time and it still sounds fantastic now. Pretty much nailed on for my top 5.

L7 - "L7"
1988
Nice and noisy debut. I always loved their energy.
Picture of Intense Degree's "War In My Head" LP on Earache Records.
Not the only Earache Records contender for #5DebutAlbums8589 but this is wide-eyed belligerent skatecore, rather than grindcore or nascent death metal.
The promo label nails it, really: "25 SONG ALBUM OF MANIC, UNRELENTING HARDCORE, PLAYED AT FEROCIOUS SPEED" π

I started 85 aged 15 and doing my O levels in Barnsley and ended 89 as a 20 year old 2nd year student nurse in Liverpool. So these were the years where LPs became more important than singles. Loads of the debut albums I bought during this period remain absolute favourites today.

Early thoughtsβ¦most likely from this lot, with only 1 (and very, very obvious) certainty.
Definitely easier, and more difficult, than the previous round.

Walking Seeds - Skullfuck
Crazy but very enjoyable.
Genre is apparently heavy psych rock??? Dunno about that, but itβs good.
Worth a punt, people.
