However, winning is a part of that. If the AHL players don't see the results of the work they put in, it can make the coaches' message fall on deaf ears and development stall. I'd say it's 50/50. The AHL roster can fluctuate so much due to the health of the big club so the players and coaches...
I think it's more about development and underlying metrics. i.e. How do their players respond to adversity? Do they fold or keep grinding? When they have a lead going into the 3rd, can they hold it? Do the players respond well to coaching and try to make the changes and respond to criticism well?
