Mystery solved. It was a rocket launch. I happened to get out of my car a moment after it launched and turned around in time to see and hear the burn.
Ha! It turns out what I saw in the sky the other day was a rocket taking off. Just happened to get out of my car and turn around exactly when it was flying by.
