2025 Housing Snapshot report published
The City of Madison’s Department of Planning, Community, and Economic Development has published its 2025 Housing Snapshot report, providing the latest insights into the city’s housing trends.
The 2025 report details progress producing housing in Madison, leading to an improved rental vacancy rate, but demand still outpaces new supply as land and construction costs continue to rise. Those factors continue to limit housing choice across Madison, especially for low-income households.

Madison passes temporary data center moratorium
Any permits for new, large data centers within city limits will not be considered for the next 12 months.
If there’s a way to use land efficiently to have a data center, I’m open to that. But to me, it is really about the efficiency and the highest and best use of the land that we have left in the city.

I'm begging my fellow politicians, Illinoisans, and Americans to realize that right now, we aren't fighting over policy or political party.
We're fighting over whether we're going to be a country rooted in empathy and kindness — or one rooted in cruelty and rage.

Public officials can make the greatest difference when they focus on their communities’ housing, transportation and utility costs.
My administration has been working on affordability since before it was a buzzword. In fact, we're working on everything this article calls for - investing in affordable housing, rapid transit and safe streets, and working to keep utility bills affordable.
