Madison Public Library received a $20,000 award, part of Carnegie Libraries 250, a special initiative celebrating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and honoring the roughly 1,280 Carnegie Libraries still serving their communities across the US.
The 2025 report details progress producing housing in Madison, leading to an improved rental vacancy rate, but demand still outpaces new supply as land and construction costs continue to rise. Those factors continue to limit housing choice across Madison, especially for low-income households.

If there’s a way to use land efficiently to have a data center, I’m open to that. But to me, it is really about the efficiency and the highest and best use of the land that we have left in the city.

My administration has been working on affordability since before it was a buzzword. In fact, we're working on everything this article calls for - investing in affordable housing, rapid transit and safe streets, and working to keep utility bills affordable.

Radon test kits are readily available online, at your local hardware store, or you can order them through Public Health. The steps for the test itself are straightforward, and results are usually available in two to three weeks.
Our efforts to create more homes in Madison are starting to pay off. We’re seeing an increasing percentage of affordable homes, and a high number of homes under construction. By improving our policies, creating incentives, or building new homes, we are using all our tools to keep Madison affordable.
Madison raised its green building requirements for City facilities by passing a resolution requiring LEED Gold certification for all new construction projects. This commitment will minimize climate pollution from our buildings and reduce operating costs for taxpayers.
