"UGH, kids these days" headlines are common. Sometimes described problems are real (sometimes not) but a few things tend to be true:
- scaring people = interest/clicks
- differences attributable to "generation" vs "aging" are often collapsed/elided
- young people didn't create their environment
An interesting practice is to read any such articles by changing their intro frame to the wordier, yet more accurate:
"Older generations have created the social and economic conditions for today's young people to [think/do/act]..."

description of image in previous post: responses to first survey question, "When it comes to giving women equal
rights with men, things have gone far enough in my country"
Avg. agree: 52%, ranging from 81% in Thailand to 28% in Japan
(full results on p6 of PDF)
Here, to illustrate: all other countries had 500 or 1,000 sample size, except Japan (2k) and India (2.2k).
28% of respondents in Japan, median age 50, said equal rights have gone far enough
69% of respondents in India, median age 28-30, said the same.
Is that generational, cultural, or both? π€·
Some of these findings seem to jibe with recent opinion trends research done just on the US. Perhaps the generational differences hold steady across the sampled countries. But there is NO WAY of knowing from this report whether that is true or whether the wildly-skewed sampling is the issue.
IN GENERAL, countries w/ a high median age (long life; stronger economy; lower birthrate, e.g., Germany, Sweden, Japan) are also more developed and are more secular than the countries with lower median ages/higher birthrates.
So: "GenZ opinions" disproportionately came from the latter countries.
In some countries, the sample is affluent/connected; in others it's more representative.
MOST IMPORTANTLY for the main headline - none of the data on age/opinion is broken down by country, but different countries have VERY DIFFERENT MEDIAN AGES as well as religious/traditional beliefs.

This story/report needs A LOT of context. The methodology is clear that it *should not be taken as representative* of global opinion. It included only one country in Africa...South Africa. Countries it sampled weren't pop-adjusted (e.g. oversampled Japan:US >4:1) AND +

It's also funny that it has been taken down
Probably bc he didn't post it and was hacked AGAIN π
This has nothing to do with the specific content here, but Polymarket adopting the language of news, here with BREAKING, and with Texas election results earlier this week, is BAD. Polymarket is not and will never be a news org or break news. It's a betting app. It's Draft Kings for sociopaths.
I'm not reading that article but in short: the subheading is written exactly backward

Cool that WaPo will run opinions like this from any old guy with a bachelor's degree, tho

wow why aren't we running everything
My unaccredited fundamentalist evangelical high school did not want to send my transcript to a Christian college I applied to because it was not the right kind of evangelical; after everything it took to do it anyway, I did not waste time applying to any prestigious/secular colleges
So: boo hoo π»
NB: I have really appreciated the impact of the Girl, I Guess guide in getting people to understand and care about and vote in local/municipal races and to surface progressive candidates regardless of official party support.
But no voter guide is perfect, of course, and it's wrong on this race.

If you do not want a Senator to the right of Durbin on several issues it is important to consolidate behind the other leadin candidate and to vote and get others to.
