Me on the left: "Welp. Grocery prices going up, up, up! (Probably)" overtop a graph showing a fast spike in diesel prices.

John McGrath on the right: "Hey quick Q for anyone, does food take a lot of oil to grow, package, and distribute."

Both us posting at nearly the same time.

We've never been in the same room together, but we are not the same person.

An oil shock would be a real good time for Canada to import an absolute ton of cheap EVs, but how? HOW?

I think it’s an open argument which is the more immediate threat to human life: climate change or that people everywhere are becoming less and less familiar with object reality.

Honestly the key to making good predictions isn’t being especially smart but understanding that there isn’t some kind of invisible fencing around outcomes that prevents them from departing from the familiar. A car accelerating at a cliff edge will go over the edge if it doesn’t stop or turn

My kids have measles, there are no jobs, and the country is at war. But at least now I can buy raw milk with my HSA card.

As someone who routinely mocks permabullish clickbait oil forecasts, I want to be exceptionally clear:

Crude WILL go to $200/bbl, en route higher, unless traffic through the Strait resumes.

Not clickbait, but rather brutal physics and necessary economic incentives.

For the approximately ninety-trillionth time of my adult life I want someone to build something that cleanly pastes text copied from a PDF, and at this point I don't care if the AI machine is fuelled directly by newborn kittens.

There Is No Housing Affordability Without Building More Housing If we make it easier to build dense housing in cities, then the resulting supply boost will ease the cost burden on renters and put homeownership within closer reach for millions of households.

Every couple of months or so, someone puts out a piece of bad social science meant to undermine the case for more housing. For Roosevelt Institute, I wrote a blog post responding to the two most recent specimens. rooseveltinstitute.org/blog/there-i...

Iran’s Underground β€˜Missile Cities’ Have Become One of Its Biggest Vulnerabilities The bunkers, built to shield Iran’s vast missile arsenal from destruction, have become prime targets in the war.

Most of the planning for this campaign is being done by Millennials- veterans of Goldeneye 64, Halo, and Splatoon- so they're spawn camping Iranian missile launchers.

Americans: we live in a fallen stateβ€”embroiled by sin, cheating, lying, and evil. You cannot trust anyone, not even those who claim to know you best

Canadians: I love my neighbors and my friends!

Britain’s class politics is backβ€”with a Green twist Britain's populist parties Reform UK and the Greens gain support among economically insecure voters, challenging Labour and Conservative dominance in British politics.

Voters can hardly be blamed for zero-sum thinking when economic growth increasingly appears to be like a mythical creature www.economist.com/britain/2026...

Historically they have been sometimes and the province did pass some changes recently but in general ZBLs govern, especially outside of core educational purposes.

I don't know the details of their specific laws but basically the structure is the renting a parking space is a "commercial use" so it has to be both allowed by the relevant zoning by-laws and licensed under the relevant city rules. And, of course, the school board needs to want it (and not all do.)

"the government has managed to cut taxes for higher-income Albertans while raising them for lower-income ones β€” and has done so through a fiscal shell game that hides the provincial tax increase in your municipal property tax bill." Many such stories!

(this is one of the more truly obscure disputes between the city and school board: the city refused to license TDSB's parking lot rentals except through an agreement with Green P that would let the city take a cut of the revenue)

Also let the TDSB rent out its parking lots overnight and weekends.
