Mosaic on wall showing full wall of white tiles with a double black line of horizontal tiles about 10cm from floor (some tiling also missing close to the floor towards the left side of photo.) Originally this was a floor mosaic. Central in the photo is a black and white bordered picture in mosaic tiles with plain straight line borders encasing a black patterned border, with an inner straight line border containing a complex picture in mosaic.
Closer picture shows the black and white framed image in mosaic form on the wall, with a scene depicted in even smaller mosaic tiles showing several figures in ancient Roman dress.
Central to the mosaic picture in tiny tiles of brown, cream, black, pinkish colours, is a handsome man, thought to be Hylas, who has a water jug in his right hand. He is barely covered in a robe as he leans forward and has a nymph represented on either side of him and two positioned above him watching his actions. It appears to be positioned around a spring of water with rocks as background.
Photo of the explanatory text for this mosaic: “Mosaic pavement con emblema refrigerant Hylas e le Ninfe…Roma, Tor Bella Monaco” Also “This floor with a geometric design features a central panel (emblema) representing the story of Hylas, the attractive young man who participated in the expedition of the Argonauts and who was captured by nymphs. Hylas remained their eternal prisoner and was thus destined to immortal life. Dated between the end of the 2nd century BC and the beginning of the Imperial period.”
