Review – Breathtaking Art Makes Up for A Flawed Manga Adaptation of ‘Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’ Capitalizing on the recent surge in anime and manga, the _Star Wars_ franchise has found great success in these Japanese-inspired media. On the anime side, you have projects like _Star Wars: Visions_. And on the manga side, works like _Star Wars: The High Republic — Edge of Balance_ and _Star Wars: Path of the Lightsaber_ are all powerful works of art that showcase the beauty of the medium. I even remarked in my review for _Path of the Lightsaber_ that it is one of the best manga titles out there. The first volume of _Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order — The Manga_, released earlier this month, unfortunately falls on the weaker side. While the gorgeous drawings and visuals from studios Mangado and Sideranch are eye-wateringly beautiful, the transition from video game to manga loses some key moments, affecting the story’s pacing and flow. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Manga Vol. 1 Broken up into multiple volumes, _Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order — The Manga_ Vol. 1 adapts the early portions of the 2019 game from Respawn Entertainment. If you’ve played that game, then the story is very familiar. Young Jedi Cal Kestis is in hiding until he gets discovered by a Sith Inquisitor called the Second Sister. He goes on the run with the help of the mysterious Cere Junda and the cranky pilot Greez. As is the case with almost all _Star Wars_ manga, the art is the real star of the show. Seeing Cal Kestis, Cere, Greez, and the Second Sister all beautifully drawn and sketched out in stylized, exuberant ways is worth the price of admission. For me, it’s the expressive eyes of all the characters. Characters’ faces, even in small, throwaway panels, are highly detailed — the twinkle and sparks in their eyes are still visible. And there are still large, full-page spreads where key moments of action are highlighted, full of sketch lines and text bubbles that make each page pop. But where this manga adaptation suffers is in its pacing and flow. Like so many adaptations of popular video games, small moments of gameplay are cut out, mainly due to time and to focus on key story moments. But these lost moments are crucial to building out these characters. Moments like where Cal and his coworker Prauf are discussing the past while running through the scrapyard are cut down, as it’s hard to make that interesting when the player isn’t in control. Or scenes where Cal remembers an old skill from his training and has flashbacks to his past with his master are not present here, as those were elements key to the story in the game, but hard to adapt for a manga where the reader doesn’t have to “unlock” new abilities. The end product is that the manga portrays important scenes from the game, but ends up missing much of the connective tissue that makes the original story great. It’s a lot like watching a compilation of all the cutscenes of a video game on YouTube, where all the gameplay stuff is cut out. You get a sense of what the story is about, but not all the rich details that give the story all its emotion. What also ends up happening is that the reader can end up getting lost as the story jumps from one place to the next. At the beginning of a chapter, Cal might be at a planet’s starting location from the game, only for him to seemingly teleport to the temple at the end of the level on the very next panel. For fans of the video game, _Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order — The Manga_ is worth picking up just to see these characters reimagined in action-packed drawings. Somehow, the artists at Mangado and Sideranch managed to capture the essence and emotion of these characters from the manga and pencil them onto the page. But, like many adaptations of video games, condensing a 20-30 hour story only creates moments of confusion, with some important details getting lost in adaptation. **Score: 6/10** **UP NEXT:** Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order _is currently available in bookstores in the U.K., but not in the U.S._ _For those in the United States, the book can be purchased and shipped to you from_Blackwell’s _and_Amazon UK.
