Wayanad Sky Island bird survey records 156 species The Wayanad Sky Island Bird Survey 2026 documented 156 species of birds. The survey was conducted between March 13 and 15 with the participation of around 55 birdwatchers. Among the species recorded were eight threatened species, 20 species endemic to the Western Ghats, and 12 species that had not been recorded in previous surveys. The Wayanad Sky Island Bird Survey was initiated in 2018 as part of the Kerala Bird Atlas programme. The survey was jointly organised by the North Wayanad Forest Division, South Wayanad Forest Division, and the Hume Centre for Wildlife Biology. Birdwatchers were deployed across 11 base camps to survey different habitats of the sky islands located above 1,200 metres, including forests, grasslands, and sholas. In Wayanad district, sky islands occur in mountain ranges such as the Camel’s Hump, Banasura, Kurichyarmala, and Brahmagiri. Sky islands are high-elevation landscapes that remain geographically isolated and climatically distinct from the surrounding regions. Notable species recorded during the survey included the Himalayan Buzzard, Malayan Night Heron, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Common Grasshopper Warbler, Black Baza, and Great Hornbill. The sighting of the Himalayan Buzzard, a raptor typically found in the Himalayan ranges of north India, generated considerable interest among birdwatchers. This species...

As climate change disrupts many species, sub-Antarctic penguin thriving as it adapts Editor’s note: “Behind the News” is the product of Sun staff assisted by the Sun’s AI lab, which includes a variety of tools such as Anthropic’s Claude, Perplexity AI, Google Gemini and ChatGPT. When scientists look at the effects of a warming planet on wildlife, the news is almost universally grim. Animals and plants are falling out of sync with each other. Ecosystems are fraying. Coral reefs are dying. Ice is vanishing. But in a sub-Antarctic archipelago, a tuxedo-clad bird is doing something remarkable: thriving. A new study published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances found that king penguins are breeding 19 days earlier than they were in 2000 — and that the shift has boosted their breeding success rate by 40%. Researchers tracked roughly 19,000 birds in the Crozet Archipelago, a remote French-administered island chain in the southern Indian Ocean. [1] It is, scientists say, a genuinely rare piece of good news from the world of climate and wildlife science. What is a king penguin? The king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) is the second-largest penguin species in the world, surpassed only by its close relative the emperor penguin. Adults stand roughly 35 inches tall and weigh between 20 and 40...

The appendix evolved at least 32 times across 361 species, so it's 'unlikely to be a useless evolutionary accident,' research finds Most people know only two things about the appendix: You don't need it — and if it bursts, you need surgery fast. That basic story traces back at least to Charles Darwin, the English naturalist who developed the theory of natural selection. In "The Descent of Man," he described the appendix as a vestige: a leftover from plant-eating ancestors with larger digestive organs. For more than a century, that interpretation shaped both textbook and casual medical wisdom. But the evolutionary story of the appendix turns out to be much more complicated. Article continues below Along with our colleague Helene M. Hartman, a student preparing for a career in health care, we combined our expertise in behavioral ecology, biology and history to review the scientific literature on the appendix, expecting a simple answer. Instead, we found an organ that evolution kept reinventing, more interesting than most people imagine. How did the appendix evolve? The appendix is a small pouch branching off the first section of the large intestine. Its shape and structure vary widely across species — a clue that evolution may have tinkered with it more than once. Some species, including certain primates such as humans and great apes, have...

The Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides) is classed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List with a stable population trend. It is native to Australia and Tasmania. It resembles an owl, but is not an owl. They are very camouflaged during the day. They are nocturnal. It has a varied habitat type that includes forest, grassland, shrubland, urban areas but not very dense forests or deserts. This species eats mainly invertebrates but also reptiles, small mammals, and birds. It nests if trees, in nests made up of vegetation such as sticks and can be further added with feather down, moss etc. Both sexes incubate the eggs and lay one to two over 30 days. They are part of the Family Podargidae which includes 15 species. They are relatively closely related to nightjars.

Outlook for migratory species worsens amid habitat loss & avian flu, report finds - news From shorebirds flying between their Arctic breeding grounds and southerly foraging ranges to freshwater fish returning to native spawning streams, migratory animals are struggling. About half of all migratory species populations protected under a global treaty are now in decline, with the situation worsening in just the last two years, according to a new United Nations-backed report. When the first State of the World’s Migratory Species report was published in 2024, 44% of migratory species populations listed under the U.N. Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) were declining, according to data from the IUCN Red List, the world’s most comprehensive guide to global extinction risk. Since then, the proportion of imperiled CMS-listed species rose to 49%, according to updated Red List data and new research. Though the next status report isn’t due until around 2030, conservation advocates said the deteriorating situation required an interim report, as many countries are moving in the wrong direction when it comes to conserving wildlife that depend on various habitats to complete their life cycles. “This [interim report] is saying there are some alarming trends in the meantime; that we don’t want to wait six years to talk about this,”...

Counting the glow: India's first firefly checklist reveals 92 species Researchers have compiled the first comprehensive checklist of fireflies recorded in India, documenting 92 species, more than 60 per cent of which are endemic to the country. The study, published in the journal Zootaxa, brings together more than two centuries of scientific records and provides the most complete overview yet of firefly diversity in India. Scientists say the checklist offers a crucial baseline for understanding how these glowing insects are distributed across the country and for guiding future conservation efforts. First nationwide compilation The checklist is based on an extensive review of scientific literature published between 1881 and October 2025. Parvez, a PhD scholar at the University of Calcutta and lead author of the study, said the work was needed because India lacked a consolidated record of its firefly species despite centuries of scattered documentation. Despite more than 260 years of scattered scientific records, no comprehensive checklist of Indian fireflies had ever been compiled, he said. “Our study brings together records from 1758 to 2025, documenting 92 species across 27 genera, nearly 60 per cent of which are endemic to the country.” Many of the species were originally described in the 19th century and have not been revisited using modern...

Game Species and Red Wolves: A Path to Coexistence on Private Lands In Hyde County, North Carolina, private landowner Jeff Akin is proving that conservation and hunting can go hand in hand. Through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife (PFW) Program, Jeff has embraced habitat management practices that support both game species and the federally endangered red wolf. Improving Habitat for Game Species and Red Wolves By participating in the Prey for the Pack initiative—a habitat improvement initiative led by the PFW Program in collaboration with the North Carolina Wildlife Federation to help recover the federally endangered red wolf—Jeff has enhanced early successional vegetation, boosting food and cover for deer, rabbits, and other small mammals. These improvements benefit hunters and red wolves alike, creating a shared landscape where both can thrive. With support from PFW Program biologist Luke Lolies, Jeff implemented a combination of mulching and prescribed burning across 25 acres to improve early successional vegetation. The mulching removed a dense hardwood midstory that was blocking sunlight from reaching the forest floor, limiting the development of the understory. The prescribed fire then consumed the decomposing mulch and leaf litter, creating the conditions needed for native grasses and forbs to regenerate and thrive. A Model of Private Lands...
