For those at #AAAS in Phoenix, @malar0ne.bsky.social will be speaking at the Expo Stage on our joint #SCIMaP work today:
'Widespread Economic Impacts of Federal Research Cuts in Local Communities'
Time: 2:50 PM for 10 minutes
aaas.confex.com/aaas/2026/me...
This tweet was a key part of our #SCIMaP team's initial motivation to launch. Not only does HHS try and highlight potential 'savings', it tries to make an impression that the issues here are confined to elite, private institutions.
These are national-scale & substantive costs.

We have more work underway in #SCIMaP, spanning reactive & proactive steps to assess, visualize, and communicate the impacts of ongoing cuts.
The #SCIMaP effort is made possible via the combined talents and commitment of @malar0ne.bsky.social, @falklab.bsky.social, @ellenpeters.bsky.social, @angiefagerlin.bsky.social, @cl10.bsky.social, @dcosme.bsky.social, C Cooke, A. Chande + more.

For my part, working with the #SCIMaP team has made it possible to connect policy changes with direct impacts on local communities:
healthjournalism.org/blog/2025/06...
As a result, #SCIMaP has adapted our analytical framework to assess losses at county, congressional district and state scales for the White House's proposed $18 billion reduction in NIH's budget

Changes in approval by baseline attitudes and ideology
How and why we share personalized information are grounded in parallel studies led by @asinclair.bsky.social (co-founder of #SCIMaP and future faculty at Rice):

Cancelled & Frozen NIH Grants
The #SCIMaP project has included these terminations as part of our analysis flow, again linking the site of grant terminations to local economic impacts. The scope of grant terminations remain a surprise to many, both to those who oppose and to those who support them.
The motivation to initiate #SCIMaP stemmed from an early decision by the administration to slash research infrastructure support to NIH grants (so-called "IDC" costs), support that is essential for facilities, safety checks & compliance required for medical research.

Launched in March 2025 as a joint project between the University of Maryland & the University of Pennsylvania and now supported by a grant from Open Philanthropy, #SCIMaP focuses on assessing the impacts of federal cuts to science on communities nationwide:

Amidst a government shutdown in which the White House has proposed slashing federal support of science by billions of dollars, our #SCIMaP team continues to assess the impact of research cuts on communities nationwide.

New thread & posts soon on #SCIMaP analysis of economic impacts of the White House's proposal for the National Science Foundation FY 2026 budget...
By using historical funding data and commuter flows to estimate budget impacts, #SCIMaP estimates that twenty-six states face over $100 million in economic losses, and more than three quarters of U.S. congressional districts will experience more than $10M in economic losses.
More from our #SCIMaP effort, including projections and state level report cards of what is at stake given the White House projected FY26 budget for NIH

There are also substantive policy matters to confront.
This is why our team has invested time & effort to make the implicit explicit - making it easier to understand how policy positions translate into economic impacts.

Sorry, I didn't understand that. To get a #SCIMaP Scorecard, you can mention me with:
- A US zip code (e.g., '90210')
- A state and district (e.g., 'CA-12')
- A state name for a statewide report (e.g., 'California')

Our #SCIMaP team, a group of interdisciplinary scientists and coders, have built a county, house district, and state level analysis tool that assesses the local, economic impacts of NIH funding. I don't recall you having reached out to learn more. Who exactly is trapped here?
