In a gaming context, it’s a brilliant use of antepiece.

Castle room in Final Fantasy Tactics. A large table with a candelabra atop it sits in the center, further illuminated by two windows. On the near side, Agrias (armored woman with braid down her back), Ovelia (red-caped woman with blonde side braids), Ramza (blonde man wearing blue over armor), and Mustadio (man in yellow and blue, with blonde ponytail) stand, facing Cardinal Delacroix (bald, mustached man with brown cassock and purple cowl). Delacroix speaks, saying: “We will expose Duke Larg’s misdeeds, and ensure that no harm befalls you, Highness.”

Man, Delacroix’s VA knocked it out of the park. Perfect balance of dignified/soothing/sinister.

I was sloppy in other ways--sending the Monk in alone when I did, not including someone tankier (Agrias takes *forever* to navigate the terrain here!)--but I was rolling, right up till I was fighting for my life.

Agrias, Ramza and Mustadio manage to overcome the Knight on the wall, while the Monk executes great justice on the last Archer, who's gotten *really* annoying since recovering from that Disable. I pulled it out... but if I hadn't punched the Monk it'd have been a lot easier.

Agrias' healing (she knows Cure AND Raise!) is key to keeping my gals up long enough to stand a chance. I focus down the Mage immediately, then whittle away at the Knight inside (my Mystic comes through the gate with her beatin' stick when the MP runs dry)

Ramza is toe-to-toe with the Knight atop the wall, which is... suboptimal for an Archer. My Mystic is safe outside, but running low on MP. Fortunately, Mustadio is safely ensconced in his sniper nest above the gate, and Agrias is *finally* close enough to do something.

Say, you know what magic rods do on 15% of their physical attacks? That's right, they cast a spell! Rod hit + Blizzard = Monk goes down. White Mage is inside with her... but so is that Knight and Mage (and Archer, with her Disable and the Mage's Silence both soon to expire).

From outside the wall, my Mystic decided to put the Monks foes to Sleep. Mage made his save, but his friend said Knighty-night! So, Disabled Archer, Sleeping Knight, both zero threat. Silenced Mage is negligible. Only the Knight atop the wall to worry about, right? Right?

Third round started promisingly enough. My White Mage made it through the gatehouse and in to the central area—just in time to heal the Monk’s hit from the Knight. The Black Mage came down to play, too, but couldn’t get close enough for a physical attack, and was still Silenced.

The same battlefield, same angle. An enemy Archer now lies facedown atop the wall. My Monk is just inside the wall, uncomfortably close to one of the Knights; the other is atop the wall, next to Ramza; the Silenced Mage is next to him, atop the stack of crates. The other Archer is not visible.

The active Archer climbed atop the wall and got a shot at Mustadio, but return fire from him and Ramza (an Archer) dropped her. My monk came through the gate to Shockwave the remaining Archer, which was needlessly risky, but I was still doing good.

About one “round” into the fight, Mustadio’s pistol + my Monk’s Shockwave had dropped one Mage, and my Mystic Silenced the other to stop their cast. Monk took an arrow from one Archer, but Mustadio had just Arm Shot the second in this pic. So far, so good!

You start outside the wall, Mustadio atop it. Inside are two each of Knights, Archers and Black Mages. The Knights aren’t a concern till you or they cross the wall, and they take a few turns to do that. The Archers and Mages, in contrast, can and will cause problems immediately.

Ah, right, never followed up on this to talk about the battle itself. It's been a good bit since I last played the Playstation edition, so I'm still kinda waking back up to how much the game *will* kick your ass if you let your guard down.

Fun video game fact about me: FFX (not on the list, but only because I love VIII so much) is the only video game to ever make me full-on cry ("Yuna, I have to go" 😭) But MGS 3 came *real* damn close.
