A card with an illustration of a black bird-of-paradise and a quest idea: "A typically quaint settlement changed beyond recognition as a new trend took hold. A local priest promised the townsfolk a sign from the gods, and - just as they prophesied - a pair of colorful birds made a home in the temple's altar. The birds became the de facto government, as the people place offering bowls along with notes and prayers in front of the birds, and follow the "advice" of whichever note they choose.

A card with an illustration of a bee-eater and a quest idea: "A colorful bird buzzes back and forth, clearly trying to convince you to follow it someplace. Tempted, you sentenced yourself to a dredge through dense shrubs deep into a forest. Your dedication was rewarded when the bee-eater stopped just short of a massive, gilded chest. Sounds of knocking and hushed cried for help come from beneath the bejeweled lid."

If you're doomscrolling, guess what? So far there are 51 kākāpō chicks hatched and thriving this season, the same number of birds as we had in TOTAL in the 90s! Only one chick has died and there are still fertile eggs waiting to hatch!

A miniature of Tragopalas, described as a kind of hornbill, in a Middle Dutch encyclopedia of nature by Jacob van Maerlant. The picture shows a pissed-off bird, wings at his hips, and two antler-like horns growing out of its head.

Have the confidence of the medieval scribe claiming they know what a hornbill is.

A card with an illustration of an albatross and a quest idea: "A storm ravaging the countryside persists days longer than usual this time of year. Entrusted with the task of finding out whether the cataclysm has unnatural origins, you discover a lone giant albatross crying out in the eye of the maelstrom. Endowed with the power of speech, the bird agrees to leave and take the storm with it, if you help it find its missing partner."

When someone says β€žScientists do not want you to knowβ€œ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.

Anyway, we're about to kick off a big marketing thing 🐦 in the coming days; I apologize in advance.

Our Natural World Library (Herbalist's Primer and later volumes) is exactly that! Maybe we too should get in touch with the organizers :)

Black and white photo of Marjane Satrapi with the quote:

"The world is not divided between East and West. You are American. I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.

And our governments are very much the same."

I'm doing the NPTEL course on ornithology. In the lecture on social behavior, as the lecturer talks about kin selection and birds helping their parents feed their newest siblings, her cats start to sing a song every cat owner knows: Mother, feed us!

Confirmed: kin selection works across species.

I need a tone read, people. I'm putting together some marketing copy. It is on brand, but does this read professional enough? /j

βœ¨πŸ¦β€β¬›πŸ¦ Come check out this bird book we're making, it's got more fun facts than pages (and it's 360 pages)! Birds are so freaking cool! Plz ask me about birds! πŸ“πŸ¦©βœ¨

I used to hate them, but once I learned how to solve them back in primary school, I became a go-to expert for my friend circle. Seeing as those are sometimes included as puzzles in modern RPG video games, I still get to flex occasionally.

I can't recall if it that's how it works in the new affinity publisher, but in most layout software you can simply add arrowheads to lines in the 'stroke' panel/menu/options :)

08.02.2026 11:59 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

In general, yes, but I think adding arrows to the lines would make it read better, because I started in top left (white box) and the had to reverse-engineer what did I do wrong. The 'weather effect' to 'seeding step' could also use a 'no' or 'no weather effect' or 'clear skies'

I remember reading the Kundera book in high school, with very mixed feelings.

How did you like Piranesi?

Well, probably not. I shouldn't diagnose the whole country with my problems.

But we're all extremely sarcastic.

06.02.2026 15:43 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Well, the pinnacle of Polish humor is to see someone trip and fall and tell them to be careful, so they don't fall.

We're fun like that. The whole country has pathological demand avoidance, so you will never hear so many underhanded threats as when you're supposed to wish each other well.
