General impression I got from that work is it's a Benidorm for rich people

I have been informed that Dubai does have drinking establishments that are recognisable as pubs. Though I get the impression they're more Wetherspoon type environments and often attached to hotels.

They don't tolerate drinking outside homes and licenced premises at all I believe.

I have spent the last few months at work building a platform for buying and selling property in Dubai. As a result I learned more than I particularly wanted to about the property market there. It feels really soulless to me. There's no way I would ever consider living there.

Wish I could give more details, but there's not much to it really. Just the obscene amounts people pay for really quite tacky looking housing. This application isn't going to be end user facing but there's a few property search sites that show the sort of thing they have in sale

I'm currently working on building a web app for matching people buying property in Dubai to properties for sale at work.

It's fair to say it has consolidated my "eat the rich" attitude somewhat...

I sometimes wonder about how Catholic nationalists work alongside rapture heretics on things like this and then remember a bunch of them are wealthy recent converts that really don't take it seriously other than trying to look pious on TV before telling the pope to shut up about feeding the poor.

1908: the Lancet, one of the most respected scientific journals, calls for 18 age limit on reading in bed amidst a moral panic surrounding children becoming "addicted" to novels, which were "designed to keep kids hooked" and destroy their attention/mental health

I've been a web developer for nearly fifteen years. Never thought I would have to make application resiliency decisions based on actual armed conflict in the client's region affecting the reliability of data centres.

Lib Dem Leader Ed Davey:

"Tax exiles like Isabel Oakeshott and washed up old footballers who mock ordinary people who stay in the UK and pay our taxes... As we protect them, it's only right for tax exiles to start paying taxes to fund our armed forces, just like the rest of us".

Yes, the tech platforms suck. They're ruled by American oligarchs who only care about profit and are usually mixed up in the far right. So we should regulate them and weaken their power, not hand all our personal data to Peter Thiel.

I'm not even sure that's true - the majority of reform voters have never voted Labour, or at least not for a long time: bsky.app/profile/prof... More Labour voters have gone Green or LD - even just on basic maths, trying to get those "back" makes more sense!

Pecksniff: Greens get it, but have the others lost the plot? In which Mr Pecksniff lays before his readers for their approval certain observations and speculations reflecting on the political life

Greens surge. Labour in denial * Farage now feels Rupert Lowe breathing down his neck * A Tory organiser boasts of love for Kemi on the doorstep – they got 1.9% and lost their deposit.

Anyone interested in reproductive rights MUST be interested in transgender rights. They are inextricable: a battle for bodily autonomy, a rejection of patriarchal control. An attempt to legislate who can participate in society and who cannot.

Ah, yes. The strategy used by the Westboro Baptist Church:

* Be an unspeakable dick outside somewhere your political opponents are likely to be in an effort to provoke them
* Get threatened
* Profit!

Thanks to Ukraine, freedom in the world still stands a chance.

And if you are an American or European person hindering Ukrainian success, you are betraying your own ancestry, as well as your children’s future.

Glory and victory to Ukraine! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦

This article is nonsensical and I suspect the negative reaction I saw forming earlier is the reason they have removed the comments section.

*30%* ffs. I wonder what that figure would be by now if our media weren’t still almost exclusively populated by intellectually indolent wankers too pompous to admit that they never had the first idea what they were encouraging everyone else to vote for. (With a side of plums who deployed β€˜balance’.)

My dad is watching a YouTube video of someone shining a pair of shoes.

I suppose I should be glad he's not watching an obnoxious right wing podcast at least...

Leaving a controlling religious group can be one of the most painful experiences a person can go through.

For those who dare to question the beliefs they've been taught for years, the journey to freedom can be frightening and dangerous.

No one should face it alone.

Yet another demonstration he doesn't have a clue.

Apparently Oxfordshire County Council is leaving X in April.

The utterly deranged responses demonstrate better than I ever could why it's the right decision.

We pride ourselves on being a democracy and yet there’s a medieval theocratic anachronism in the heart of parliament: 26 bishops with automatic seats in the House of Lords. (The only other country in the world with clerics automatically entering a government is… Iran).
