Pavement parking options for change: government response

Beyond disappointed that the government has gone against what the majority of respondents supported in the consultation

With subjective wording and leaving enforcement up to local authorities will not solve the problem

It's a pity some of this doesn't rub off on the folks in #TfL who manage Outer London roads because we have missing dropped kerbs and tactile paving, overgrown vegetation and missing green men on TfL's junctions.

Frustrating to have to listen to this, but the pressure has to be kept on.

We need a national ban and then let council's proposed places where they wish to provide footway parking through the democratic process, including assessing the equality impacts.

Would have preferred yellow over grey for the tactile paving though!

Oops, forgot to add. I did start off reporting via council website (sometimes difficult what category a missing dropped kerb goes under), and eventually was asked to stop doing it via website and just email in a doc outlining them all.

Happy to send you a copy of a report etc if you like. DMs open

By doing it on a ward basis, it also makes it easier to go back & check if work has been completed (Cllrs aren’t the best at keeping you updated even when they say they will).

Some councils are better than others. I’ve had one council fix an issue within a month & another took 5 years…

Documenting it on a ward basis allows me to

1. Keep track of everything better
2. Hold Cllrs to account

I also have a doc that tracks all email correspondence with Cllrs/Highways teams so I know what the latest is with each ward & when I first submitted a report for each ward.

I initially reported them as I saw them, but soon felt there was a better way of doing it

Cllrs have to win elections & are keen to show any tangible difference that they can have in their ward

That's it, the end of the thread! Five spots where accessibility can be improved across Cathall ward in the Waltham Forest.

A document highlighting these was sent to the relevant councillors on 02/11/25

Surely we want our streets to be truly accessible for all.

The lack of a dropped kerb here on side where the bin is, results in people who use a wheelchair not being able to cross the road.

Screenshot from Google Maps shows the pavement interrupted by an entrance way to a car garage. On one side of the entrance way, there dropped kerb is not flush with the road surface of the entrance way.

The lack of a levelled pavement or suitable dropped kerbs here makes the pavement difficult or even inaccessible for people who use a wheelchair.
