On my to do list has been to write something about how area studies are rising in China precisely at the same moment as they are declining in the U.S. (and maybe elsewhere in the West as well...) but now I'm worried this is so apparent someone else will write it first!
What's more shocking than ICE's plan to cram as many 8,500 humans into massive, soul-crushing warehouses?
Seeing the actual DHS floor plan that echoes slavery ships and history's worst gulags with no rec space but a gun range for guards

If Bad Bunny can cover the history of Puerto Rico, colonialism, transatlantic slavery, hemispheric consciousness, as well as contemporary life and politics in under 14 minutes, you can do your 15- or 20-minute conference presentation with time to spare.

What are the challenges to transatlantic coordination on China policy? Is convergence possible on any issues? What does the downturn in transatlantic relations portend? For answers to these questions and much more check out the video of yesterday's webinar discussion:

i’m very much looking forward to participate in this workshop next week, to share how the U.S. Administrative Procedure Act has influenced Chinese administrative law, as part of a much wider international discussion about the APA on its 80th anniversary
Rich men stripping the institutions of the country for parts.
In January, we brought 20 leading next generation China scholars and experts from throughout Europe to Washington, DC for a full week of intensive dialogues with U.S. policymakers. In Friday's webinar, five of those experts will share their general take-aways from the DC meetings
This is a moment when we will find out who is willing to call out obvious lies - and who is willing to let themselves by duped by them
Also, may I say that I don’t agree with people saying ICE and CBP need “more training.” They’re doing exactly what this administration has trained them to—impose a reign of fear in blue cities. They don’t need more training. They need to be ripped up root and branch.
Thank you so much to @neysunm.bsky.social & @penn-us-china.bsky.social for bringing us to DC und to Jifeng Books for hosting this discussion!
For those who missed last week's timely discussion in-person, here's video of our program on "European Policy Perspectives on China" ft. Una Bērziņa-Čerenkova, @samgeall.bsky.social, @rudyakmarina.bsky.social & Konstantinos Tsimonis, moderated by @neysunm.bsky.social:

Greenland could be the moment when EU becomes a geo-economic superpower. It has long had the economic might but lacked the political will. Today’s leaders meeting will be decisive.
All key European leaders now said they won’t go along with this. So if the objective was coercion it has already failed. (This is not a US miscalculation- its a very Trumpian one).
It has been our great privilege to convene this exceptional group of leading experts on China, from throughout Europe and the UK, in Washington DC this week for a very full range of dialogues about current prospects and challenges for Transatlantic coordination on China policy.
