This is a hugely important story: everyone concerned with learning and truth should read it. Presented with prompts about a lesser-known turn-of-the-last-century composer, an LLM produces a nice, clear readable evaluation of her Symphony No. 1 - which DOESN'T EXIST. Everything is made up. 😵💫

True, but also this is only mapping people who weren't born in a country. Eg in France I'm sure there are many racialised people contributing to the other line

In my ongoing aim of making my research more accessible, I thought I'd compile a thread of where you can find my publications in open access form, and also some TLDR summaries. Will pin this somewhere for future reference! I'll do it chronologically as a way of mapping my research journey too... 🧵

...in the case of message sticks, certain 'simple' objects with low information in terms of entropy can be involved in communications that have very high information content. This is because not all info is encoded in marks but in shape, timber species, orality, kinship identities and institutions

I'd always assumed they needed a Mediterranean climate to grow - it was a real surprise! They were still good, like the ones I've found in Australia. But yes, I'll never forget the Turkish ones 😍

Metal pot on stove top filled with reddish water, onion, carrot and lots of octopuses
Food part two today: get yourself a 9 year old kid who's been wanting to make pickled octopus for ages. "This is the best day ever". (I did nothing other than take this photo)

Thank you - I felt quite inspired! 😊
I'll never forget the taste of the ones in Turkey though... wow. The fig memories are reminding me of how bountiful my life is and has been 💚

Today, the figs became this.

Two figs cut in half and lying on a wooden board
Got some figs today, which I rarely ever have and they sparked two very different travel memories. The first, 2014, in a small town in the Turkish-Syrian border, where we were fed a full delicious bowl of them. Second, in Belgium in 2023, from my colleague's tree -hadn't expected them to grow there!

Reading this, I couldn't help but think of message sticks and wonder whether these notched carvings may have worked similarly, eg been used in combination or to assist spoken communication.
@languageonthemove.bsky.social has a great discussion with @pierskelly.bsky.social on this

This is the absolute core principle of the rule of law, supposedly an Australian value.
Let's see what happens...

Rob Jetten becomes Netherlands' youngest ever prime minister
The 38-year-old is sworn in as premier after clinching a narrow victory in October's election.
"globally, he joins a very small club of openly gay leaders, and for many viewers in countries where coming out carries real risk, seeing an openly gay man become prime minister is a powerful glass‑ceiling moment"
The glass ceiling still very much in place via strict anti-asylum policy though 🤷♀️
