It's a beautiful day. A beautiful day to open your apartment window for a lovely breeze only to find out that a car alarm is going to go off every 20 minutes for an hour

My kid is going through a yogurt obsession right now. I'm begging them every day. Please eat something else. This is not an advice-seeking post! I just really appreciated that and so many other things about the movie
It was so smart of If I Had Legs I'd Kick You to choose to center a struggle to get your child to eat because most parents struggle with picky eating of some kind and it's soooo hard
You'd probably see more women in senior reporting roles and editor roles if the career advancement path for journalism ever considered how best to keep parents in journalism, but of course this is an issue that is pervasive in every industry
There are so many of us as who have kids and are forced by lack of childcare to scale back our work and need to get back into full-time journalism roles and a fellowship is not a magic bullet but I think it is useful in this context
If there were more pathways to transition from one kind of journalism work to another or build more skills while navigating a layoff with less economic pressure
There are many fellowships out there for early career journalists, as there should be, because it's a difficult time for them as well right now. But I wish there were more mid-career fellowships out there because I think it would be useful in this environment to stop more journalists from leaving
journalists are workers who deserve to be paid fairly for our labor and I think that far too few consumers of media recognize or even care about this fact
Please forgive typos and other errors. My toddler crawled on me the entire time I wrote this.
Itβs all so broken and I wish I had any answers.
There are few reporters who can make a similar income as an independent journalist through something like Substack or a regular podcast and then who edits your work? can you employ an editor?
This is not the way that we keep journalism alive. You have very few staff reporters with even fewer editors who stretched too thin and a ton of freelancers trying to support themselves on what is usually insufficient pay, if theyβre lucky and get an assignment
This is the reality for so many laid off journalists today. We are trying to create something valuable for readers with no support
I feel like I should get a little more credit for freelance reporting with a toddler at home in my one-bedroom apartment with no reliable internet because we were late on the bill because we had to pay for groceries

The mass layoffs at the Washington Post feel worse than the ones made during 2020, especially after the ones at NBC News, CBS, and the WSJ. So many smart and experienced people will leave the industry forever.
