€20bn MetroLink price tag misleading

Madam — Your report last week claimed that Dublin’s MetroLink “is expected to cost more than €20bn” (‘Metrolink workers could be housed in pre-fabs, officials suggest’, March 1).

The latest cost estimate for MetroLink is around €9.5bn. The higher figure is an unlikely worst-case scenario. It is neither factual nor fair to present it as the expected cost. It’s misleading and confusing and undermines public confidence in a much-needed project.

Facts matter. Quoting a worst case scenario figure as the estimated cost for a project is incredibly damaging for such a vital project. I'm glad they took my letter though!

The country needs more homes built. But in our area, it seems our calls for good planning are being ignored.

I spoke with David McCullagh recently on the need for government to build schools in our area - the area that's delivering more homes than any other. 1/2

“Business as usual” won’t build a world-class research sector: Green Party responds to Research Ireland’s newly launched strategy | Green Party

Ireland cannot outsource its future to FDI alone. Research Ireland’s long-anticipated strategy does not match the scale of the opportunity that exists in Ireland, nor the urgency, given the ongoing geopolitical disruption

There’s still time to check seanadvoter.ie and get registered for the new Seanad Higher Education constituency before the February 26th deadline.

Please don’t assume you’re on the list as voters on the previous NUI and TCD panels were not automatically added to this new register.

1/2 In light of the violations by Grok the X AI chatbot let's look at the gap in Irish law.

There's an apparent and dangerous gap in the law. Under Coco's law that got enacted in 2020 the sharing of deepfake and harmful content is illegal so is the using of such material for harrassment. However

Traffic in Dublin has gotten crazy the past few weeks. But the new government is taking money away from public transport projects that could deal with it.

We could have had a new DART station and improved lines at Heuston and Kylemore Road in Ballyfermot. But no. Roads instead.

We now have Green Mayors in 5 EU capitals!” shows a simplified map of Europe with five highlighted countries. Circular portraits of five mayors appear around the map, each connected by a colored arrow to their respective capital city: Sisse Marie Welling (Copenhagen, Denmark), Femke Halsema (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Viesturs Kleinbergs (Riga, Latvia), Gergely Karácsony (Budapest, Hungary), and Tomislav Tomašević (Zagreb, Croatia). Each portrait includes a small national flag and the label “Green Mayor of” followed by the city name.

We won't always make popular decisions but at the very least we could make fair decisions.

Fine Gael & Fianna Fáil would prefer to angrily shut down debate, rather than hear criticism of their rent hikes on the least well off while giving the maximum tax cut to homeowners.

This week I voted against Fine Gael’s proposal to increase: rents, car parking charges, and bring centre fees, in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown.

Fine Gael councillors seemed confused about our party proposing to actually protect the most vulnerable and less well-off in our community.

Last night Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil balanced a €9m hole in our council’s budget, caused by giving a 15pc tax cut in Local Property Tax, by hiking council tenants rents and increasing car parking charges and green waste charges.
