(4) In doing so, this presentation highlights the opportunities of corpus‑based approaches, noting the scope of what these methods can—and cannot—reveal about learner language.
(3) Each question is discussed in light of possible corpus methodologies (e.g., corpus selection/creation, technological tools, data analyses) and implications for language learning and teaching.
(2) This presentation discusses how learner corpus methods can be used to address three key questions in SLA (Saville-Troike & Barto, 2017, p. 2):
- What exactly does the L2 learner come to know?
- How does the learner acquire this knowledge?
- Why are some learners more successful than others?
(1) Learner corpus research draws on “electronic collections of natural or near-natural data produced by... L2 learners” to learn about second language acquisition processes (Granger, Gilquin, & Meunier, 2015, p. 1).
I'm excited to speak about analyzing learner language using corpora at CALICOffee on Feb 20 at 1pm EST. Grad students interested in SLA and/or corpora are very welcome to attend this virtual talk 🤓 (link in the attached flyer; abstract in the comments)
Such a fun time working with you (pl.) on this! ☺️
I'm looking forward to reading the other excellent chapters in this handbook! ➡️ global.oup.com/academic/pro...

Takeaway from @hankslizzy.bsky.social ‘s plenary @cl2025.co.uk 📚🎓 - Conversation is extremely heterogenous & broad, with situational characteristics more or less distinctive; thus, we need to quantitatively evaluate representativeness & use precise language to describe our sample #cl2025
Thank you, Anna 🙏 I'm so looking forward to yours!
Simply super talk by @hankslizzy.bsky.social #CL2025 taking us on a journey on the yellow brick road of corpus creation and representativeness by means of a reflection on prototypicality
“Any corpus is like the Emerald City - you need to go inside & poke around a bit” 🏰 In her plenary @cl2025.co.uk @hankslizzy.bsky.social takes us along the yellow brick road to LANA-CASE, tackling representativeness: what (register), who (demographics), and how (authenticity) 📚🎓 #cl2025
This morning I was honoured to give the opening plenary at the #CL2025 conference - thanks to everyone who came along and engaged!
Such a fantastic talk! I'll certainly think more about context in my future work. Thank you for sharing 🙏
