Okay, I really like MikroTik’s #RouterOS for routing. It’s good at that. I’m slowly learning that it could use a lot of improvement in its client functionally… beginning with standards-compliant (and consistent) behaviour from its DNS resolver.

Two coffees later it dawned on me that I was pinging from the device anchoring the pseudowire, so IPv6 was fragmenting at source. A packet capture showed the fragmentation headers •and• the missing MRRU attribute in the L2TPv3 pseudowire setup. Should have started there. #NetEng #ThereAreDays 2/2

I just spent an hour #Labbing an #L2TPv3 pseudowire native fragmentation (#PWE3) problem. Turns out the platform doesn’t •do• native fragmentation, but it took forever to figure this out because my oversized #IPv6 pings were crossing the wire. This shouldn’t happen without native fragmentation. 1/2

Today I learned that #Proxmox VE has predefined TAP interfaces for every #VM interface. #Serendipity

If a vendor or provider is trying to become an industry leader and we hear them using the “Our customers haven’t been asking for that.” excuse, they’re failing. Yes, listening to customers is important. Letting their wants of the moment sum up the company “strategy” is a warning sign. #Observations

Sadly, depending on where people are, that part may or may not be new.

Globally, 2026 (and maybe a few years leading up to it) is a perfect storm of the ideas found in the “1984” and “Brave New World” novels. Control narratives where possible and flood the feed with distraction so that nobody can focus on any one thing long enough to build something better.

That bubble needs to burst quickly. AI has some really cool uses (finding needles in haystacks and other large-scale analytics) but those aren’t what most people are using it for. It’s too often a solution desperately trying to find problems to justify itself.

I’m sure… though it disturbs me a bit that we have scenarios where we’re doing this.

A silly excuse used to avoid #IPv6: The addresses are too hard to remember. Here’s a thought: Maybe if the addresses are •really• hard to remember, folks will stop configuring them directly into client configurations and we won’t have to go finding broken stuff when the service moves. #Grr #NetEng
