Hmm. If weโ€™re going to use #TOTP for our #2FA, why are we entering it โ€ขafterโ€ข our passwords? Seems to me that we would cut down on a lot of phishing if we had to enter it first in order to get to our password prompt in the first place. #CoffeeThoughts #InfoSec

Thursday is #PinkShirtDay, supporting anti-bullying efforts. Itโ€™s a worthy cause and it has my full support. Still, being an #ElderGeek, I will always think of my Team OS/2 days when I think of pink t-shirts.

Okay, I really like MikroTikโ€™s #RouterOS for routing. Itโ€™s good at that. Iโ€™m slowly learning that it could use a lot of improvement in its client functionallyโ€ฆ beginning with standards-compliant (and consistent) behaviour from its DNS resolver.

Two coffees later it dawned on me that I was pinging from the device anchoring the pseudowire, so IPv6 was fragmenting at source. A packet capture showed the fragmentation headers โ€ขandโ€ข the missing MRRU attribute in the L2TPv3 pseudowire setup. Should have started there. #NetEng #ThereAreDays 2/2

I just spent an hour #Labbing an #L2TPv3 pseudowire native fragmentation (#PWE3) problem. Turns out the platform doesnโ€™t โ€ขdoโ€ข native fragmentation, but it took forever to figure this out because my oversized #IPv6 pings were crossing the wire. This shouldnโ€™t happen without native fragmentation. 1/2

There are labels that are only relevant when theyโ€™re assigned to us by others. โ€œAwesomeโ€, โ€œcoolโ€, and โ€œinfluencerโ€ are a few. When people apply these to us, itโ€™s a sign that weโ€™re doing something valuable. When we apply these to ourselves, thatโ€™s a different thing. #Labels #Awesome #Cool #Influencer

Word of the day: Assiduity n. great care and attention to detail. A required quality of networking practitioners engaged in labbing. If we don't know all of the details of how a thing works, we don't โ€ขreallyโ€ข know how it works at all. #NetEng

Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s taken me so long. I left once back in 2011, but got sucked in again because some class I was taking used it for their student materials. Itโ€™s definitely worse now than when I left last time.

Yeah, just got tired of feeding the algorithmโ€ฆ and being a bit of a slave to it too, truth be told. Iโ€™m primarily on Mastodon, but crossposting here as well.

I should create my own automation engine and call it โ€œAlโ€ (a tip of the hat to Paul Simonโ€™s โ€œCall Me Alโ€ there.) Iโ€™m thinking that Al-driven blueprints might find some popularityโ€ฆ for reasons. ๐Ÿ˜‰ #AI #Al

If a vendor or provider is trying to become an industry leader and we hear them using the โ€œOur customers havenโ€™t been asking for that.โ€ excuse, theyโ€™re failing. Yes, listening to customers is important. Letting their wants of the moment sum up the company โ€œstrategyโ€ is a warning sign. #Observations

Jody Lemoine ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ (@ghostinthenet@hachyderm.io) The thing I find really scary about how many of us use LLMs has nothing to do with #AI itself. It's that these are โ€ขreallyโ€ขย appealing to our tendency to be slothful. If we're using an #LLM because we ...

Globally, 2026 (and maybe a few years leading up to it) is a perfect storm of the ideas found in the โ€œ1984โ€ and โ€œBrave New Worldโ€ novels. Control narratives where possible and flood the feed with distraction so that nobody can focus on any one thing long enough to build something better.

Let me know when LLMs get past the point where a new employee producing similar results wouldnโ€™t be summarily let go in their probationary period. #AI #LLM

That bubble needs to burst quickly. AI has some really cool uses (finding needles in haystacks and other large-scale analytics) but those arenโ€™t what most people are using it for. Itโ€™s too often a solution desperately trying to find problems to justify itself.

I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve seen a server (that wasnโ€™t serving a DNS role) with a static IPv6 yet. Iโ€™m sure Iโ€™ll run across one eventually.

A silly excuse used to avoid #IPv6: The addresses are too hard to remember. Hereโ€™s a thought: Maybe if the addresses are โ€ขreallyโ€ข hard to remember, folks will stop configuring them directly into client configurations and we wonโ€™t have to go finding broken stuff when the service moves. #Grr #NetEng

I'm tired of dealing with folks who never get back to me with answers. New idea: Not going to ask, "Is this the right thing to do?" Instead, I'll go with, "I'm doing this on Wednesday. If this isn't going to work for you, provide an alternative solution by Monday evening." #TheyHadTheirChance
