Sweden detains freighter Caffa in the Baltic Sea over suspected links to Russia's shadow fleet
Swedenโs Coast Guard and police on Friday, March 6, detained the freighter Caffa in the Baltic Sea as it sailed along the countryโs southern coast under the flag of Guinea. Authorities suspect the vessel is part of Russiaโs โshadow fleetโ and believe it was operating under a false flag, Swedish broadcaster SVT reported.
In an operation dubbed โBlack Coffee,โ a police helicopter landed on the cargo ship before Coast Guard and police officers took control. Investigators are currently conducting searches and other procedural actions onboard.
โWe believe Caffa was not conducting innocent passage through Swedish territorial waters. Without a flag state, there is no state that can guarantee the shipโs safety and seaworthiness,โ the Coast Guard said in a statement .
Swedenโs Minister for Civil Defense Karl-Oskar Bolin said Caffa is on Ukraineโs sanctions list. โThe vessel is on Ukraineโs sanctions list, its ownership structure is unclear, and there is suspicion it lacks insurance. Earlier this summer, the ship reportedly switched its flag from Russian to Guinean,โ he wrote on the social platform X .
According to Ukrainian authorities, the freighter was used to steal grain from Crimea annexed by Russia, SVT noted. When it was intercepted, the ship was loaded with grain and was headed to St. Petersburg, the Swedish Coast Guard said.
Bolin added that the investigation will determine whether the vessel meets the requirements to operate in Swedish waters. โAgainst the serious challenge posed by the โshadow fleet,โ the government believes it is necessary to pursue an active countermeasures policy,โ he said. The Coast Guard, for its part, said it has launched a probe into suspected violations of the Maritime Code, with authorities judging the ship to be unseaworthy. Officials noted they still need to determine whether the freighter is linked to Russiaโs โshadow fleet.โ
Russiaโs โshadow fleetโ largely consists of older ships operating outside Western insurance and registration systems. The network helps Moscow skirt European Union sanctions imposed after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In May 2025, Swedish authorities said they would step up insurance checks on foreign vessels because of Russiaโs shadow fleet. As of July 1, the Coast Guard and the Swedish Maritime Administration gained authority to collect insurance information not only from ships calling at Swedish ports, but also from those transiting Swedenโs territorial waters and its exclusive economic zone.

Finland to lift ban on transporting nuclear weapons across its territory
Finland plans to remove its legal ban on bringing nuclear weapons into the country, Defense Minister Antti Hรคkkรคnen said at a Thursday evening news conference, Yle reported .
Hรคkkรคnen said the prohibition, introduced in the 1980s, is no longer relevant. He argued the current law does not meet Finlandโs needs as a NATO member and noted that blanket bans of this kind are rare among other allies.
Transit of nuclear munitions through Finnish territory would be allowed only in cases tied to the countryโs defense, he said. Hรคkkรคnen stressed Finland is not seeking the permanent basing of nuclear weapons; that would require a separate intergovernmental agreement subject to review by Parliament and the countryโs leadership.
Opposition parties - the Social Democratic Party and the Left Alliance - criticized the governmentโs approach, saying the issue should have been discussed with all parliamentary parties. Hรคkkรคnen cited the sensitivity of the matter but said it should not come as a surprise, noting the government had previously signaled it was examining the question.
Implementing the shift will require amendments to the Criminal Code and the Nuclear Energy Act. The government plans to provide all members of Parliament with classified materials on the proposal and aims to pass the legislative changes by the end of the summer.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron announced an increase in the number of nuclear warheads in Franceโs arsenal, in a speech at the รle Longue naval base in Crozon, home to the countryโs ballistic missile submarine fleet.

Russia eyes capture of Odesa as it weighs southern ground offensive, analyst says
Russia has not abandoned its strategic ambition to seize Odesa, one of Ukraineโs largest port cities, with the Kremlin weighing multiple options for a southern offensive that could pave the way to dominance in the Black Sea, a Ukrainian analyst said. Photo: TASS
Alexander Kovalenko, a military-political analyst with the โInformation Resistanceโ group, told the outlet TSN that Moscowโs interest in Odesa has remained unchanged since the start of its full-scale invasion because of the cityโs strategic value. Capturing it, he said, would effectively cut Ukraine off from the Black Sea and give Russia full control over the maritime region.
Kovalenko noted that Russia pursued similar aims in 2022, when it envisioned a large-scale amphibious landing. Those plans collapsed, he said, and Moscow is now unable to repeat them after significant fleet losses and the relocation of vessels to Novorossiysk following a series of strikes.
He said a theoretical airborne assault is also unlikely, given Ukraineโs effective air defenses that could disrupt such an operation.
The most plausible option for Russian forces, according to Kovalenko, is a ground offensive. He outlined two potential axes: from the breakaway region of Transnistria, or from the left-bank part of Kherson region. But he assessed that Russiaโs current force posture there lacks the resources even to force a crossing of the Dnipro River and hold ground on the right bank of Kherson region.
Advancing toward Odesa would also require pushing through Mykolaiv region, where terrain poses added challenges. The areaโs numerous estuaries and waterways would significantly hinder the movement of large military formations, he said.
Still, Kovalenko cautioned that a current shortfall in manpower and equipment does not mean Moscow will abandon the plan altogether. He warned Russia could try to gradually build up its presence in the south.
โThatโs why itโs important for us to be ready for any scenario. Pavlo Palisa is saying exactly this: the risks were, are and will remain as long as the war continues. We need to be prepared for the possibility that Russia finds the necessary resources. We need prepared defensive lines. The Russians can only conduct a ground operation; all other attempts are unrealistic,โ he said.
Kovalenko also pointed to the possibility of intensified strikes on Odesa and the surrounding region. He said the tempo of attacks could come in waves, with lulls followed by new periods of heightened activity.
A range of factors could drive any escalation, he said, from weather to political or societal events. May 2 could be one trigger, he added, noting that Odesa remains symbolically important and sensitive for Russia.
Earlier, Ukrainian serviceman and political scientist Kyrylo Sazonov outlined what he described as Russian plans to expand operations in the south with a potential push toward Mykolaiv and Odesa.
And Pavlo Palisa, head of the Ukrainian Presidentโs Office, said Russia aims to seize Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Odesa, and has not given up on the full occupation of Donetsk region.

Zelensky: A Ukrainian pullout from Donbas would save 300,000 to 1 million Russian troops
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says some around the world have started treating as โtruthโ Russian President Vladimir Putinโs claim that โif Ukraine is not in Donbas, the war will end.โ
โDespite everything Russia has said before, its aggression has only grown,โ Zelensky said in an interview with Italyโs Rai Italia . โWe simply cannot trust the Russian side. We can try to negotiate an end to the war with strong mediators, but the conditions must be such that we do not believe or rely directly on Russiaโs words. We must understand that if Ukraine is not in Donbas, there is no guarantee Putin will not continue the war. I would even say the opposite. The fact is that he will continue. Whatโs uncertain is whether he will continue immediately.โ
He said Putin needs time to prepare - staffing brigades, additional divisions, and more. โThat takes time. This I believe - he needs that time. But who can guarantee he wonโt then continue the occupation? And why should we leave our land that we control? He couldnโt achieve anything on the battlefieldโhe doesnโt have the forces. He wants us to believe him and simply leave our well-fortified territory. These fortifications limit the capabilities of Russian forces. Putin understands that if we withdraw, he will save from 300,000 to 1 million of his soldiers, depending on the intensity and duration of offensive operations in Donbas. Why should we believe him and hand out such gifts?โ
On March 4, Zelensky said the negotiation process to end the war has been suspended due to fighting in the Middle East
