Every objection to AI I've ever seen comes down to an LLM being used by a novice, on a very very bad use case. Of course Claude shouldn't be launching nukes! Of course Grok shouldn't be directing movies! Those aren't problems with LLMs, they're problems with the people who use them.

The other part is that I don't want to just assume things about AI because they've been repeated to me ad nauseum by people who have never used an LLM. I also hate that Microsoft won't let me opt out of their AI assistant! But I refuse to be intellectually bankrupt and oppose all LLMs because of it.

I made the mistake of trying to get AI haters to even consider the question. They wouldn't do it, skipped immediately to claiming I believed AI could reason. I'm a huge AI skeptic! But these questions are fascinating, and this is an amazing time to be able to at least partially answer them!

I lived in Minneapolis and Loveline was syndicated on the local alt rock station, I stayed up way too late almost every night to listen to people that actually talked about sex and relationships in a realistic way, and were able to laugh a little while they did it. Insane where they ended up.

This is an excellent thread if you wanna talk about the difference between LLMs and actual consciousness but you'd rather listen to thought-ending cliches from people who *also* don't know the difference but are absolutely convinced they do but also don't wanna talk about it.

But people are gonna be mad. I'm not gonna change everyone's mind. I'm much more of a skeptic than people give me credit for, I just refuse to form my opinions based on bad science and bad-faith actors trying to manipulate my emotions. I'd rather talk about fun stuff like human consciousness.

There's an understandable and very relatable exhaustion and anger over having "AI" tools forced into every experience on earth but that's a failing of capitalism, not LLMs. That's hucksters trying to make a buck, and not representative of the actual work being done to advance the field.

Opponents of AI like to make wild claims like "AI isn't conscious" when they can't even define what makes *themselves* conscious. I agree that they can't reason or think, but we're learning fascinating new things about how all of that works. It's helping us better understand ourselves.

I don't think it's a god! I just want people to think more critically about new technologies rather than let outside opinions color their view of them. All technologies have the power to be used for good or evil, that's not a unique feature of AI.
