Every time the ventilation started grinding children it startled Sophia a little less, but it never didn’t startle her. It didn’t sound as loud to her this time, maybe because the room was bigger or because it had to compete with all the chatter and clatter and splatter. On the other hand, the echoes of the rumblings made the ventilation system sound and feel even more terrifying than usual.

It turns out the sounds of the HVAC system in Sophia's school horrify her when she's in the cafeteria as well. She has a hard time believing that nothing sinister is going on.
