Tomorrow, the NYS Assembly Committee on Environmental Conservation votes on A.8043 B, the bill to ban commercial octopus farming in New York. These farms trap octopuses in tiny pools, causing stress, fighting, and high mortality—they can’t explore or be social.
To be treated as a production tool and systematically separated from your family over and over again is not a life we’d wish on anyone. We’re privileged to care for Ruthie and looking forward to sharing her story with folks when public education tours start up again in May!
Had she stayed in dairy farming, Ruthie would have had a much sadder story. The suffering cows go through in dairy farming (on both large and small scales!) is truly hard to grasp.
But she’s also got a mischievous side and we’re excited to see her grow in confidence as she continues her first year here. We’ve caught the older pasture residents giving her grooming sessions and she remains close with Franklin even as her social circle has expanded.
Well, caregivers who know her best have compared her to Glimmer from the recent reboot of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power ✨Unlike many of our very strong personalities here (ahem…Heathcliff, Max…) Ruthie can be very shy and cautious at first meeting.
When Franklin arrived later on, Ruthie became the first cow friend he’d had likely since birth. Later when that org announced closure, the two of them came to live at Woodstock.
So who is Ruthie?
Ruthie was born on a dairy farm and was very small at birth—meaning she likely wouldn’t be “profitable” for the farm so they didn’t want to spend money taking care of her. Fortunately she was rescued and taken in by Squirrelwood Equine Sanctuary.

While many folks already knew Franklin when he arrived at our Sanctuary, his buddy Ruthie who came along with him was kind of in the background for a while.

It’s so frustrating and terrible advocacy
Different species need different things. It’s less about heating a whole building and more about providing safe heaters in accessible areas to the residents who need it. For example, our pigs have hanging heaters over their beds and it’s crucial for the senior pigs’ comfort when it’s so cold out

What a difference a few months makes! Suzy would have been slaughtered by now if she had not escaped animal farming. We just can’t imagine that—and every day we try to make her life the best it can be 🐽
