Yeah, that's definitely a fair point.
If I can't disagree with you and still empathize with the circumstances your facing, we're kinda screwed. (Again, some positions are definitely not debateable, but where do we draw the line?)
<- Then there's the supposed juxtaposition between empathizing and sharing different political views. I think a lot folks (especially online) assume one necessarily negates the other, and to some degree I might agree, but it completely erases any room for common understanding there could have been.
<- So they go, "Yeah, well it's complicated" or "We're living in difficult times" in order to offend no one.
Which absolutely comes across as disingenuous. ->
<- (and ideally also end up on the "right side", whatever that means).
I think what happens is that people think they have to have done the work of the second in order to be allowed to legitimately do the first. Which in a political set up as convoluted and complex as this, is unrealistic. ->
I think there's two things happening here for me:
First, me wanting to empathize with people affected by the conflict, especially if they're my friends.
Second, me being interested in the history and the politics of said conflict and trying to engage with that intellectually

At least for me that response is usually a sign of fatigued helplessness, somewhere between acknowledging and sympathising, while simultaneously not knowing how to properly. And I get that that's a very privileged attitude that one can only afford if they don't have any stakes in that conflict.
Nine Inch Nails' "Year Zero", an album written almost 20 years ago, managed to capture the political climate we're currently experiencing with such brutal accuracy. The fact that it culminates in the US engaging in nuclear war with Iran is really just the icing on the cake.

Coming out of Stormblood (which definitely was weaker than Heavensward), Shadowbringers is absolutely blowing me away. The story beats, the world design, everything feels so deliberate and well executed.
I have recently started playing through Shadowbringers and the writing and story are absolutely stellar.
