This is one of the things that I find is most shocking to people outside Minnesota who don’t realize it yet—the scale at which everyone who isn’t white has been forced into a spectrum of hiding.

Very good article drawing out the Tahrir Square comparison.

MN has struck a real chord. I’ll add: I don’t think you can break echo chambers by trying to win debates or outshouting Fox. You break them through people. Keep sharing facts with those who already care, and let those conversations ripple through families and communities. Build organic resistance.

I think this article is important in part because it’s mostly NOT about AI. It’s a combination of things that have contributed to our absolute mess of an information ecosystem right now including people in power outright lying constantly. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/25/u...

OpenAI Tries to Shift Responsibility to Users OpenAI is trying to shift the blame for bad legal and medical advice from its chatbot away from the company and onto users. We agree that no chatbot should be used for medical or legal advice.

Its near "super intelligence" "replacing professionals" in the PR rounds, then once everyone is convinced and uses them for legal and medical advice, following the deceptive marketing, they slip it in the terms of service that you shouldn't do that.

cool pincer movement if you truly grasp:

AI & any concept relating to it like so-called guardrails are a scam in the deepest sense like a perpetual motion machine or a quija board — and not only a scam like a pyramid scheme which is a possible way to make money if you are first in first out

Today's decision in GEMA v. OpenAI by a German court holds that ChatGPT infringes copyright when it memorizes song lyrics. The opinion cites my paper with @afedercooper.bsky.social on memorization in generative models, and its analysis tracks ours.

Age Verification, Estimation, Assurance, Oh My! A Guide to the If you've been following the wave of age-gating laws sweeping across the country and the globe, you've probably noticed that lawmakers, tech companies, and advocates all seem to be using different

A law that requires "age assurance" sounds reasonable and moderate. But if that law defines age assurance as requiring government ID verification, it's not moderate at all—it's mass surveillance. Here’s a guide to what all those terms mean: www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...

Japan's "Mundane Halloween" costume contest is back!

Each year website DailyPortalZ holds a contest where people dress up as something super duper ordinary.

Here's a thread of some of my favorites from the 2025 contest!

I'm so goddamn tired of saying this but: this is it.

All the worrying that trans folks have had since he took office? This is why. This is the first step on a short road that ends with the criminalization of trans existence in the US. It isn't doomsaying. It isn't panic. It's right in front of us.

Ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee Bennie G. Thompson said in a statement “Mobile Fortify is a dangerous tool in the hands of ICE, and it puts American citizens at risk of detention and even deportation.” He also said “ICE officials have told us that an apparent biometric match by Mobile Fortify is a ‘definitive’ determination of a person’s status and that an ICE officer may ignore evidence of American citizenship—including a birth certificate—if the app says the person is an alien. ICE using a mobile biometrics app in ways its developers at CBP never intended or tested is a frightening, repugnant, and unconstitutional attack on Americans’ rights and freedoms.”

New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people

This morning, I’m at the CSCW conference in a session on “Activism in a Time if Data.” Most of the papers seem to assume activism for “good,” ending with design recs for supporting activism. As far as I can tell, none of the papers center right wing activism. Seems like we have a massive blind spot.

But we also found key affordances which don't map to the economic left and right spectrum. For example, left-leaning groups had different attitudes towards user intervention, and groups across the spectrum decided against a personalised newsfeed, instead opting for a classic web forum architecture.

We let politicians across the Finnish political spectrum sketch out a social media platform and examine the values their proposals embody.

Our findings suggest that,
📈 the political right prefers visibility based on popularity,
👨🏻‍🎤 while the left supports more flexible self-presentation.

New article out, just in time before #CSCW2025!

This piece, by @eppfel.bsky.social, me and @matnel.bsky.social, looks at what happens if we ask politicians with different ideological leanings and party affiliations to design social media services.

Imma keep it short this time:

Companies are using our work without compensation. That's the point of AI

The endless debates over whether this is "true art" or not, or whether it's gonna take over the world some day, are a distraction from the indisputable fact that this is pure exploitation
