Nightime shot of steam and smoke swirling above the lights and towers of a refinery looking nearly black and white.
Smoke and steam swirling above the towers and lights of a refinery at night appearing almost monochrome.
The cold snap was perfect for long-exposures of a central Montana refinery.

Book cover for Chuck Hoganβs Devils in Exile. White block letters on a rough-hewn brick wall.
Iβve been reading a lot of @chuckhogan.bsky.social this year, binging The Strain one after another. But the real standout was Devils in Exile. Itβs been months, and I still see images from the book in my head like memories. Great characters. Great storytelling. πβ‘οΈ

This Farmer-Owned Meat Processing Co-op in Tennessee Changes the Game
A Q&A with Lexy Close of the Appalachian Producers Cooperative, who says the new facility could revive the areaβs local meat economy.
At a new farmer-owned slaughterhouse co-op in Tennessee, farmers can have meat processed and ready to be sold in two weeks, and they share the plant's profits. This puts control of food back in the hands of the people, not corporations. See what a better food system looks like β‘οΈ buff.ly/slY6v3c

This story is wild. It almost reads like a corporate/political thriller. Bottom line, if you have cash, you can poison whole neighborhoods of people and get away with it (esp if theyβre poor, rural, or marginalized).

Why Did Cars Get So Hard to See Out Of?
If it seems like forward visibility has gotten worse, youβre right: Since the 1990s, cars and trucks have grown bigger A-pillars that can create dangerous blind spots.
There is nothing at all about A-pillar visibility (or mirror patches) in federal car safety rules.
With cars getting bigger and blind spots expanding, that seems like a serious oversight.

Two farmers standing in front of a barn
Here's how:
Follow local farms on social media to learn about their practices and challenges. Become a member of a farm organization in your state.
Join a farm tour or a field day at a farm near you to spend some time getting to know a farmer and their specific methods of farming.
Build relationships and connections with farmers. This is an important β and rewarding β way to create a local food and farm economy.
#4 way to Support Family Farmers? Connect with a farmer in-person or online!

Heads up, writer friends. For the second time I received a cute email from an 11 year old asking if I'd read their short story and give feedback. Story Not an attachment but a link. Be safe. Delete. Do not respond. Emails virtually identical but for boy/girl name.

Mountain biker in a helmet and orange shirt wearing a cheesy-ass grin at the top of a trail. grassy slopes and mountains behind him.
Grassy slope into a wide valley with a river and mountains in the background.
Lone tree in front of a grassy mountain with a trail cutting across it. Blue sky and sun above.
Fun, swooping trail heading downhill with grass and shrubby trees alongside. Blue, snow-capped mountains in the background under a blue sky.
That smile when you hit your 50th new ride for your 50th year at the top of Destroying Angel, part of the Copper City trail system outside Three Forks, Montana. Huge views from up here. I counted seven different mountain ranges (but there could be more.)

Trail sign with sun rays cutting through the branches of the trees and a trail escaping into the background.
Bermed trail snaking its way back and forth between the trees.
Same trip, I dropped the bikepacking bags and hit a fun trail just south of Bozeman. Big views, ripping descent.

Mountain biker on a trail with trees and mountains in the background.
Trail sign in the foreground with a trail winding into the trees behind it and mountains in the background.
Narrow, feathery stream cutting between green grass and under downed logs.
Mountain bikes lying beside a trail near a green alpine lake and mountains in the near distance.
A few weeks ago, before the snow-line crept too low, a friend and I met in Bozeman for a bikepacking overnight. Cold, but beautiful.

Blue-green Clark Fork River with sunlight glinting running below a railroad bridge with mountains and gold autumn foliage in the foreground.
Sunset with a river flowing away from the camera toward a mountain I. The background. Yellow autumn leaves on trees in the foreground.
Low sunlight lighting up the mountainsides on the far side of the valley while a river flows between yellow autumn trees.
